I posted earlier about this concert, but I did so prematurely. The building where it was originally scheduled to be held is undergoing renovations. We now have a new venue.
The concert will take place on Sunday, September 13, at 2:00 PM at the Brand Library in the city of Glendale, CA. The address is 1601 Mountain Ave, Glendale CA, 90201-1209 The phone number is (818) 548-3782.
The concert is called "Connections" and the featured artist is Miss Carole Mukogawa. Carole is the leader of the trio (I call it "my trio" but it's really hers.) She also plays with other ensembles, and the trio will only be one part of the concert.
If you look Carole up on Google and see who she is and what she has accomplished, you will understand why I consider her asking me to play with her to be the greatest honor of my entire life. I feel very privileged to be part of her musical world, and amazingly lucky that she is part of mine.
This is special. There has never been a classical chamber music ensemble with a pedal steel guitar before. We are breaking new round, and the results are simply magic.
The trio's portion of the concert will be between 20 minutes and half an hour. Our repertoire consists of music from the 16th century to more contemporary material.
Everybody within driving distance is invited. And as far as I know, admission is free.
I'll post a flier as soon as I get one. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Here is the flier for the concert.
The trio has performed at half a dozen private events over the last year, but this is our public debut.
I hope to see a lot of you there. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Congratulations to Mike for working with Carole, Michelle et-al in proving that the pedal steel guitar is capable of genres of music other than country.
Mike, I hope you can somehow get an audio recording of at least part of the concert -- hopefully, something you can post or email to your fans (such as me).
[Yeah, but can your ensemble play "Way To Survive"?] _________________ Pioneers of Western Swing HOF, Seattle 2005

Thanks Roy, Here's a link to the recordings Carole has played on.

You can see why I feel so honored that she has asked me to play with her.
In addition to playing, I'm also doing all the writing and arranging for the trio. This is a new experience for me. I've never done anything like it before, But apparently I have a real flair for it.
Working with Carole is the most challenging thing I've ever done, but it's also the most rewarding. This is the band I've been waiting for my entire life. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

My wife, Norma Jean and I had the pleasure of hearing the Stringroller Trio a couple of weeks ago rehearsing for their upcomming gig. It is a beautiful sound and a step forward in making the Pedal Steel Guitar a legitimate instrument in the world of music. Up until recently the Steel Guitar has been considered a novelty instrument, good for only certain kinds or styles of music ie. Hawaiian, Country, Western, Pop and more recently Jazz. If this trend continues, Mike Perlowin is really breaking barriers. Kudos Mike. We're proud of you, a real pioneer.

I heard Mike play with the same trio about a month ago; it was good. It certainly is a different use of pedal steel than many are accustomed to, so for that reason alone I urge all local steelers to consider coming to this show. Another reason is that it is good music, and yet another reason is Mike is a good guy, deserving of all the support we can offer while venturing into the pedal steel unknown.

I would love to attend this concert, but California is such a remote place...
I hope that you will be able to publish some audio/video of the concert.
We are many fans around the globe that want to hear this but can't be a the concert

It's always nice to hear steel in a new context. I will have to miss this one to celebrate my daughters 11th birthday, but highly recommended. |

Thanks guys. Anders, Carole has a little camcorder, and will be videotaping the concert. The technical quality will of course be very amateurish, but at last it's something.
She actually videotapes all her (and our) performances, with the idea that she (we) can study the tapes and find the weak spots and work on them
I cannot say whether or not she will allow me to do anything with the footage, or even if she'll give me a copy. I'm also not sure I want you guys to see all my mistakes and hear all my clams.

BTW, In addition to playing, I'm also doing all the writing and arranging for the trio. This is a new experience for me. I've never done anything like it before, But apparently I have a real flair for it. Sometimes this only involves taking the notes from the sheet music and assigning them to one of the 3 instruments,. Sometimes it involves composing whole new parts and sections.
I feel very awkward (to say the least) telling this lady who is so much more advanced and experienced then me what and how to play, but she has been extremely encouraging and complimentary toward my writing and really wants my input as to how to interpret the music.
I feel very privileged to be able to play with this woman. Words like "great" and "wonderful" don't even begin to describe how well she plays, and she's also a really nice person to boot. I want to adopt her to be my big sister. (She's only one year older than me, but the relationship is closer to that of mother and son, as well as teacher and student.)
This is the band (if you can call it that) I've been wishing and waiting for my entire life. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
