I recently relocated to Va. and would enjoy hearing some of the area players. Any information on local venues would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
David

Welcome to Old Virginia, a state where you can legally carry an unconcealed firearm! Anyway, you are asking about steel, not guns. I believe you are outside of Richmond which means you aren't to far from Buddy Charleton. He is still actively teaching if you want to further your steel expertise. As far as steel goes in a live situation, one of the best, if not the best bands in Virginia is the Brandy Stills Band and you can view their bookings at brandystills.com. My band rarely plays in Virginia since James (leader of the Brandy Stills band) has all the joints and venues locked up. Hi James! This band has it all. Hot pickin, exceptional vocals with in tune harmony complimented by their "Big Show!" It ain't no disco thAng, song after song, they will really entertain you.

Gary,
Thanks so much for the information. I met Buddy at Billy Cooper's shop and have taken a few C6 lessons from him. A very gracious man and a HELL of a player and instructor. I would highly recommend anyone who wishes to improve his or her playing to contact Wanda Cooper and schedule a lesson with Buddy.
I will definitely check out the group's web site that you mentioned, it sounds like exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks again for your help.
Best regards,
David

Charles,
Thank you for the cordial welcome. I would really enjoy meeting you. I will be at Billy's shop this coming Saturday, the 7th to take a lesson. If you are not busy, perhaps you could drop by. If this is not possible, e-mail your phone number and I will give you a call.
By the way, your brother makes a great product. I was checking them out at Cooper's store and found them to be very well made and extremely comfortable.

Well David welcome to the south. Give Charlie a call...you'll like him...I do (hehe) He just has started with the steel and if you can remember back to when you started you know what he's gotta be going through. I am sorry to say that I have been so busy with the seat business that I have not been able to help him. Hopefully we will be all caught up soon and can get back down to the nuts and bolts of playing again. The Coopers are fine people who will always treat you right and Buddy....well Buddy is a great guy who will do you right on that 6th neck. I get up that way from time to time so maybe I'll get a chance to shake your hand as well. Sam...how goes it buddy...thanks for the kind words. We all miss you back here but I know you're having fun up there. I'll get that e-mail returned to you soon. Charlie,,,my big bro...heard you were getting educated this weekend down in Williamsburg. You know they still have the nut house down there????

Later

Hi David, Welcome to Virginia. You already know about Billy Cooper's Steel Guitar Shop (the very best IMO). There are several steelers in the greater Richmond
area. Teddy Lloyd, Ryland Tennell(SP?) and Don Fullmer quickly come to mind. Email me if you would like Don's phone number or email address. There are also several steelers in the Tidewater area and they have a good website.

George and Ray,
Thanks to you both for the kind words of welcome. Ray, I am looking forward to meeting Charles. It is always a pleasure to meet other players and swap ideas.
George, do the area players have a steel guitar assn., or ever get together for jam sessions? Also, do any of them play out locally where I might catch them? I would like to get to know as many as I can.

David, The Mid-Atlantic Steel Guitar Association has members from Virginia and other states in the region. This association has jams periodically and just had one this past weekend. One of the benefits of the Mid-Atlantic Assoc is free admission to jams they sponsor.
By email, I will send you Don Fullmer's telephone number and email address. He is much more familiar with local players, bands etc., than I am.

Hey David,
Welcome to Virginia... I moved here about 18 years ago from Southern California and have enjoyed it a lot. If you or any of you other pickers would like to be listed on our website just send me a picture of yourself at your guitar with a short bio and list of what equipment you use and we'll put you on. The site is "Steel Guitarists of Hampton Roads" and can be found at www.evertize.com/sutphin Have a good 'un and by the way, where is Gum Spring? JH

Dave if I were you I would JOIN the Mid Atlantic Steel Guitar Association. MASGA.
There are a lot of guys From VA in this Assoc. I'm a member a will remain a member until they throw me out.It is a good Organization. You get on the computer on our web site and you can find out where all the Steel jams are. The one in Wilson is a great Jam that Bowie Martin sponsores and he does a great job. Right now Ken Latchum is the Pres. And Glenn Landing is the Vis. Pres. Two more of the great guys. Skip Mertz, Ray Walker, Charlie Walker,Clyde Mattocks, Bowie Martin, and a bunch more from N.C. are at most of the Jams Mike Calaway, and Jerry Flemming are from Salem VA next to Ronoke and David Christmas and J.J. are from S>C..Also you have Tony Prior from N.C. I think Tony originates from either Mass or Conn.but I think it is Mass.Go to the Wilson Jam it is a beautiful place and it is called the BILL ELLIS Convention Center. You have to have the Pig roast they put on it is the greatest.Depending on when they have it in Wilson I might be going to Florida to visit the Grils and the grand kids and I will take in the MASGA Jam.Wilson is about 100 miles from where you are it only takes about a hour and a half and it is Exit 116 off I-95 I beleave.

Dave Bill is right you should try to go to the Tri City Steel Show . Steve Lenoard is a great guy and he has a great Steel show. I'm almost sure Anna and I are going to make it down to this Second Show that Steve and his Dad have. You will meet a lot of great steel players and a bunch of great guys.I was there last year for the first Steel show and I won the Tri City Steel Guitar T Shirt that every one of the Steel players signed and i have it hanging in my Steel Room right behind my Steel. You have to make some of these steel shows that The Mid Atlantic Steel Guitar Assoc. has.Remember if you go to a show you take your Steel as they will want you to play. I know you can do it as you are a great steel player and they like the Buddy Emmons sound so you don't have to worry.I will be looking forward to going to the Tri City Show and see all our freinds in VA and TN.
