Jazz Steel

Post by Al Marcus »

Jim-Sounds like Jim Cohen. I also liked "Autumn in New York "clip.

I have some old LP's of the 40's and 50's, with various artists. I got one of Ben Webster, on Tenor sax and one of Paul Desmond on Alto Sax, just great stuff.

Keep that Jazz site going, you are showing that the Steel Guitar is more versatile than people imagine it. Thanks...al.:) :D 8) 8) 8)

Thanks, Jan. I've been traveling a lot lately and haven't had the time to change the website to announce the winner, so it will run a few more days before I take the suspense away.

Amazing, but it happens every time. I announce the identity of the player and then SOMEBODY always goes and votes for him, AFTER THE FACT! Huh?? Is this a test? Did somebody just give you the answer just before the teacher collected the papers? Well, okay, you got it right, okay? Whoever you are, you got it right.

Oh, and Richard... about that hat... you're gonna be needing a new avatar... :)

Ah yes - ya wins some and ya loses some.

Thanks to Matthew Prouty in Joe Drivdahl's "Hat" thread, I have a source for a new one.

My wife, Shirley, wears a stupid smirk on her face when she asks me how I would like it prepared - baked, broiled or fried. I suggested shredding it into a salad since it would make for a lousy entree'.

Had some fun with this one, Jimbeaux, but I'm mindful of that old adage about opening mouth and inserting foot. Hope the hat tastes better than shoe leather. You'll never know.

And that was the name of a fine old tune.

Hi,

I can't thank Jim enough for including me and my music in this nice quiz. It's a real pleasure to be part of this. Also, thanks to everyone that participated and confused me with all the great players in the list above.

Regarding the tune, it's an excerpt of a draft recording of a tune I wrote earlier this summer. It's named "Waltz on Elma Street" in reference to our sweet baby daughter Elma Josefina who was born in May this year. The initial tentative title for the song was "Nightmare on Elma Street", but then I realized that my steel playing was not done on the "Kruger" neck.

Jan, I'm the one who's flattered to have been mistaken (by 3 people) for you! I'm really pleased to be getting to expose your music to a wider audience; you're doing great things, keep it up man!

Best wishes,
Jimbeaux

p.s. Jan's recently-released jazz album is superb; highly recommended to all. You can get a copy through his myspace page, which is linked over at SteelGuitarJazz.com

Again, thanks for the nice comments. I just realized that I forgot to mention my highly obedient, and trustworthy, friend Mac Hine who played all the drums, basses, pianos and marimbas on this recording. Our collaboration on my recent CD worked out quite well so I thought I'd use him again.

I hope baby Elma will appreciate having a tune dedicated to her when she grows up. A few months ago things seemed less positive ...

Paul, I think he meant the "Kroger" neck, i.e., the E9 neck, which will get you to the grocery store ("Krogers"). As apart from the C6 neck, which (some say) will get you to St. Louis (aka "The St. Louis neck").

Jim is correct in his description of the E9 neck nick name. In jest, I chose to spell it "Kruger" as a (clearly undetected) reference to the 1984 Wes Craven horror movie whose title my initial tentative tune title was derived from. Sorry for the confusion  :)
