Topic: Rare Black Lap SteelFender |

A fellow french player, Robert Pourageau, is looking for a rare lap steel Fender. Black, solid body, white neck with black circles, a golden trim on the body, pickup under an aluminium cover. Aluminium plate with two black pots, tone and volume. Maybe late forties to early fifties.
He says" it is the first guitar that I have listened to, at the age of 4. Its sound is still in my mind, having given me the envy to play music"
If someone can help Robert to find which model he speaks of, it'll greatly appreciated.

for a moment i thought of the model that Fender made for Jerry Byrd
but since you mention late forties, early fifties, i'm at a loss
maybe a custom job since the original K&F / Fender steels from that era were yellowish, or mother of pearl crackle finish |

Counterfeit, R&D instrument, modified-refin, employee project (never heard of this for Fender, but common among Martin guitars) or undocumented one-off.
I've never heard of or read about anything like this, as described, in how many dozen? Fender books or websites.
If Jody Carver hasn't heard of it, it's probably just a dream.

As he said, Robert still thinks that the guitar was genuine:
"Fender was written in golden letters at the neck end. This 6 strings came directly from the US, thanks to family friends who lived in Kentucky. The case interior was made of green baze with 2 compartments to store picks and bar."
Maybe you're right, Ben, about the employee project.
BTW how could he take contact with Fender for this topic?

Perhaps he's thinking of the K&F lap steel? That's the only one from that time frame that could possibly match that specification so far.
The current Fender Customer Relations information is here, but I highly doubt they will have any information on Fender lap steels from that era. All information on Fender's lap steels was lost after the company was sold to CBS in the 1960s.
