It's instrumental time this week. Here's a track from 1973, an instrumental version of the old Bill Anderson ballad "Still". Great steel break in the middle!
Back then, when you heard Charlie McCoy's harp, it was usually Lloyd doing the steel and Walter has always been one to keep us on our toes so I'm going to sit on this one for awhile...
Some good guesses here so far. The track comes from Mother Maybelle Carter's Instrumental solo album on Columbia from 1973. The album not only features great music but also some interesting conversations between Maybelle and the musicians.
It is Charlie McCoy on harmonica. Other players include Bobby Thompson, Jimmy Colvard, Chuck Cochran and Pete Drake. But there is also another steel player and he's the one who is playing on this track.
Ok, the other steel guitar player on that album is Stu Basore, so it must be him.
Checked the cover on the original double-LP album, but couldn't see that Stu B. was specially credited for participating on that melody though.
I can't distinguish between Pete and Stu on sound/style alone on that record.
Georg, you are right. It is Stu Basore on Steel. He and Pete Drake get the credits for playing on the album. Although the song is not listed specifically, it is definitely Stu playing on this one.
