I usually hook my steel up to the volume pedal, then to the matchbro, then to the amp. _________________ "Hotrod"

Don't know the characteristics of the MatchBro, but any unit that changes the impedance - load on the pickup - will change the steel's tone. Even changing type or length of first connection cable will affect the load/tone.
Might be a good idea to start by finding out what your steel really sounds like when loaded somewhat correctly, by inserting an active match-box for steel as first stage - directly from the steel - with a short, good, cable. Only then can you definitely say what your steel sounds like, and VP, MatchBro, and all else that is inserted after such a match-box - in any order, won't affect the load then. |

There were several different models of MatchBro.
The one I have listed (with sound sample of it both on and off) at
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=164240
has a separate tone control for the Steel Guitar when the dobro effect is not active. I believe that was designed into it because they realized the fact that anything in the signal has some effect on the tone.
The battery level also can affect the tone. I've always used an external power supply to avoid this issue.
I like the unit to be between the pickup and Volume Pedal. |
