| He is entitled to his opinion, of course, but he's obviously never heard the Big E. or Doug Jernigan or Mike Smith or any of the other great pedal steelers. How could any informed individual make such a statement? JMHO. Memo to self: remember to remove adjectives such as greatest, best, only, from vocabulary.

Oh well. Guess I better get back to practicing.
edit: my point is that using words such as "greatest" is fraught with folly. It's an opinion. Opinions can't be held as anything but a personal opinion. RR is great at what he does, he garners a LOT of attention for this instrument. But the only way he or E or anyone can be called "the world's greatest" is if indeed everyone in the world agrees. That's all.

| I have heard Robert Randolph on the radio on a gospel hour show. He plays very well and precise. Love the way he uses his volume pedal. Also, he has a video which you can see on VH1, where he lays the steel on its side and upside done when he plays. |

I think Ken Kase left the word "blues" out when he said RR is the world's greatest... Maybe, Ken doesn't know the pedal steel is a long standing country music instrument.
Well, now we know how the sacred steelers felt all those years when most of the world thought the pedal steel was only a country instrument.
By the way, if you go to the article link, you can click on Ken's name and send him an e-mail. I think assertions about Ken's lack of knowledge are appropriate, but please don't cast aspersions against RR and blues-gospel. This is not his fault.  |

Perhaps we should all send the author Ken Kase a short note explaining that he may perhaps be incorrect in the words.
If a man knows nothing of a subject but only one tiny tidbit and professes that he is an authority he should be corrected. HISTORY cannot be ingnored. This does not mean RR should not enjoy his moment but rather those that have preceeded him should not be ignored.
Maybe he should be told that Loyd performed on over 6000 sessions with his original Sho-Bud..maybe he should be told who Paul Franklin is, obviously he will be told about Buddy and many others. Maybe he has never heard of Buck Owens or Ernest Tubb..anything is possible.
At least this Ken Kase guy stated what the Instrument is...but what he does not know in reality is what a Pedal Steel Guitar is..

From what I have read to date on the forum RR has gotton more than his fifteen minutes of fame....
Guys ..if this is where the steel is heading we all need to fasten our belts!! I'm not sayng we should be living in the past but the past is what got us here. So if RR needs this much press so be it...But then lets give it a rest...

One thing is sure, Ken Kase does not know anything about the pedal steel guitar; he knows less about Speedy West, he knows "O" about music , and his writeing is terrable when it comes to naming musicians and compareing same...In short,, HE STINKS.... Jennings,,,,

Hey man I don't know about RR being the "Greatest living Steel Guitarist." Thats a pretty subjective statement given the Pedal Steel Royalty that hangs out around here. However, this quote "These cats could play "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and make it groove to the point where Mary could care less about her lost lamb because she's too busy shaking her ass.", pretty much says it all about the band. Those boys know how to jam. No doubt about it. Now I'll tell you a concert that would be worth the money. Buddy Emmons along with RR jamming on some blues. Oh yeah!!

| While Robert Randolph is a talented and unique steel player he definitely is not the greatest living player and will never be the greatest player of all time. Everyone has their own opinion and there will always be debating on the greatest. Robert Randolph has definitely brought the steel guitar into a different realm than it has been before. I admire him for the talent he possesses and his attitude apparently is down to earth. I sure am proud of him for playing these shows and showcasing the steel guitar. Too long the steel guitar has been stereotyped as a country music instrument and I have heard the comments about the whining and crying driving people crazy. I love the old country music but I sure love to hear some good jazz and even hear Robert play as well. Incidentally, my vote is for Buddy Emmons who has always been my personal favorite steel player. |
