My thoughts on this post are simple:
Many posts have appeared where Forumites boast and brag about this or that on their favorite guitar.
BUT......... Let's focus on one brand at a time, a single product and let's find out WHY you wouldn't purchase one of 'that one'. Be specific....state what feature lures you in; or, chases you away.
It could be productive for those in the business.
Players usually identify an instrument's failings in fairly short order. The player should be the final word in what a g'tar can/cannot deliver.
What say you? |

In my opinion, this appears to be flame bait whose main purpose is to cause and watch a train wreck. I find myself growing weary with builder bashing. |

I always play them unplugged at first.
If it's a 'whiner', I'm out of there. |

I won't by a brand that uses cotter pins to hold the rods to the bellcranks.
I had one once and making changes was a drag (it was NOT a Mullen... I have never owned a Mullen but I think Mullen Steels look and sound great).
I won't buy one that uses E-clips to hold the rods to the bell cranks, either.
Changing the rod position in the bellcrank (and/or the ability to quickly change the copedant in any way) needs to be super easy. |

I'm guessing this is a little off the subject. Sorry, but I thought RIchard made a good point. That is, when it comes to guitars, steels and their relatives, playing them unplugged first can be an ear and eye opener. I do that a lot and am often nothing short of amazed at what I hear. |

I wouldn't buy anything I didn't like.
Why? Because I wouldn't like it. ![Rolling Eyes](images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif) |

No where did I suggest we black-ball or flame any manufacturer...... or start any kind of a range war.
My point is simple, and YOU should be able to catch that much....
I never purchased a Sierra pedal steel, not because I tho't they were inferior in any way or for any other reason than I personally found it difficult to pick the proper strings due to the angular change of the fret board just ahead of the pickups. This gave me a visual allusion that I've never heard anyone else comment about but to me, it was a big 'negative'.
Rickenbabher Bakelites with their BLACK necks and metching frets are a problem to play in a dark club. |

As I am in the antipodes
and I have heard similar comments from our Canadian bretheren
I would be influenced by the dealer's preparedness and ability to provide adequate service outside the US |

I wouldn't buy a single neck with less than a 3X2 setup. Seems like there is a lot of music to be had with a 3X2.
I know that you can take a 3X1 Maverick and hot-rod it...but I don't have the tools or the know-how.
I wouldn't buy another Session 500. I have one and dearly love it...but it stays in one spot. However, if I came across one for $0 - $200 I'm sure I would buy it, they really are the Cadillac of steel amps.
Also, I wouldn't buy used gear from a forum member with a bad reputation. In the past, there have been a few guys that seemed kind of sketchy. For the most part, I'm convinced that steel players are some of the best people to deal with.

Ray,
I probably wouldn't purchase this one.
At least I wouldn't pay an arm and a leg for it.

I have a quirk about end plates being angled or anything other than 90 degrees from the body............ I dont know why.......BUT!!!!! I almost bought a G2 at the 2007 ISGC. Crazy Huh?????
But really..I think this Guitar thing is getting WAAAAYYY out of hand, there isn't a guitar being built today that is unusable for the purpose that it was built for, AND I believe that the builders of modern steel guitars are providing a wonderful selection that allows a buyer to really get what he is looking for in a guitar. Lastly....HOW COULD WE HATE YOU CHRIS????? You always provide a perspective that is worth considering.....BUT maybe we hate you cause you play really good .YAAAAA thats it.

I always enjoy what Chris has to say. He offers his opinion based on his experience. I agree with most of what he says. Other times, we have different opinions. That's no reason to have hard feelings. |

Well, I sure wouldn't buy a $12,000 steel, cause I don't have $12,000... I wouldn't even buy two $6,000 steels! If you wanna make another thread about "What I wouldn't play even if it was FREE" my list would be very, ummm, non-existent. |

I tend to shy away from the common ones. Right now, that would be Emms and Zums. (It's just not in my nature to be "mainstream".) ![Cool](images/smiles/icon_cool.gif) |

I wouldn't buy a homemade body steel with Emmons parts and a chrome Emmons logo. It's not an Emmons, it's a homemade steel with Emmons parts.

I wouldn't buy another Carter Starter. I bought one many years ago and it's been in its case for most of that time. Recently I fitted Emmons pedals, while at the same time moving them three inches to the right. Then I fitted an Emmons pickup. I plan to do something about that awful Formica. But no matter what improvements I make to it, it will always be a budget model. ![Sad](images/smiles/icon_sad.gif) |
