I got these glass vials - they are about 3/4" in diameter and the glass part not inlcuding the cap is 2 7/8" long - I then designed some labels that fit inside the vials that say "Custom Made for D. BROOKER" using different fonts on my wood veneer, one cherry and the other on some birdseye maple - They are then filled to the top with BB's - Since I'm not an expert I can't compare them to much - I only have a cheapy dobro I'm having fun learning to play - I've been using a Shubb SP-4 that according to my scale weighs about 5 ounces - the glass slides weigh about 4 - the tone is somewhat brighter and they seem to work just fine - I'm thinking about making some with some rattlesnake skin on the inside and I have some other graphic materials that would make for some interesting effects - Just thought some of you might like checking them out - Feel free to comment or ask questions - Dennis Brooker

That's an interesting variation on the glass slides that are already out there. Does the cap of the vial come in contact with the strings under normal use?

I like the way you think Dennis - I bet you could find some test tubes or glass cigar tubes, cut to length, fill with some veneer, epoxy and fishing weights to get a bullet bar.
When I saw the cap - I thought "what's the knob for?" - then... small motor, eccentric weight, battery, speed control pot - presto - auto-vibrato! Add an e-bow and it's almost self-playing  |

I've tried the test tubes, the glass is relatively thin they sounded good but they won't handle a drop very well. I went with a Dunlop 3/4 inch (I think) glass slide capped one end with a dime, stuffed it with lead shot and filled it with epoxy. I use it almost ezclusively. I am missing the bullet nose though. I'll be looking for a glass cigar vial next.

Eldon - Since I'm new to playing anything on my lap and I've not used any bar with a bullet nose so when I get the chance I'll try to have someone that knows what they're doing show me the difference and why they profer one over a flat nose - For now I'm having fun with these  - DB |

I've added a photo of some new examples of my "Assembled" slides - The one on the upper right is genuine rattlesnake skin - It has been suggested that I get a video on youtube showing an example of someone using one of my slides - I'm going to try and get it done locally but if anyone wants to volunteer PLEASE contact me - Thanks for looking - DB
