Folks,
Do you remember The Mom And Pop drive ins and Sandwich shops before Fast Food Joints arrived on every block and Interstate Highway exit?

Well you can still get good food like it used to be at the Saluda Shows.

Great South Carolina Style BBQ Sandwiches, Hamburgers, Fries and Hot Dogs. Don't pass up a slice of Mrs Buddy Walker's Delicious Homemade cake for dessert.

Great Music, Food and Southern Hospitality is what you will find at Saluda

Changes At Saluda

We, actually Buddy Walker with some volunteers, are making some changes to the sound system at Saluda. Hopefully this will make things run smoother during the shows. Most obvious, will be the addition of a sound booth/equipment room and to the players the greatly reduced number of wires and cables running around to various points on the stage floor.

We are Gonna do an experiment with miking the instruments this time and if it works out, by the November show all Amps on Stage will be miked from the overhead with Choir Mics eliminating the need for someone to be moving Mic's while a player is trying to set up. This should let the show flow a lot smoother and make life a little easier for the players and the Ole Soundman. All of this should eliminate some dead time between players also.

All of this is being done to make Saluda a little less artificial, more natural sounding and reduce a lot of clutter and confusion on the stage. Also a lot more enjoyable for the players and People who attend the Southern Steel Guitar Conventions.

All of this is being done with donated labor and materials also, My Thanks to the folks who Donated and helped.

I'm getting old and my memory sometimes isn't what it used to be. Couple that with concern over my good friend Bill Stafford's Ruptured Appendix during the May show and Bill was scheduled to be on that show, that I completely forgot about a Donation by one of our most loyal supporters, a good man who played his first show at Saluda.

David Christmas generously donated one of his super guitar amp stands to be raffled off at the May show. These are hand made by Bro David and are super quality, nothing like the cheaply made stuff you find in Guitar Center and other discount music stores. I just found out yesterday, from Buddy that I had never posted anything on this and need to correct that oversight.
Like the walker seat we still have a few more tickets to sell on the raffle for This great guitar amp stand @ $5 each

As I have mentioned before , David played his first show at Saluda, Sharing The Stage with Wayne Williams and You would have never known that it was his first by listening to him. He sure got some Great tone out of that CLR steel guitar and the quality of the playing sure matched the tone. I have decided I need to carry a notepad with me and write things down. That surely is a sign of getting Old.

Received word from Ray Walker yesterday that he will have a display of Walker Seats again at the August Show. Look em over, try them out and Check out all the neat Seats and Merchandise Ray has to offer. Lots of Famous butts sitting on Walker Seats, There must be some good reason.

I still think he needs to turn me and his brother Charlie loose in the shop We had some neat ideas for Walker Seats.

All we needed was the Company Credit card and we would have been in business. implementing some of our revolutionary ideas for Walker seats. as the Recliner Seat for Laid back Steelers and the Butt kicker seat complete with remote control for the wives. I have the first one of each sold to Donna Dodd. the butt kicker to keep ole Tommy in line.

Ray just hasn't come around to Charlies and my way of thinking, but we are going to be doing some serious lobbying with him at the August show.

Smack him again Charlie! , Now Ray , How about that Credit card What do you mean by NEVER!

Mike,

It will be a great show, even a better show if you could be there. I'd love to see you make it to Saluda one of these days, I think alot of folks would add you to their list of favorite players like I have.

Sorry I missed you on Saturday but Bob and I didn't get to Nashville until 5:00. Loved your set Sunday though. See ya Tuesday night.

I'm pretty sure he will be there , but until I hear from him confirming it, I won't post his name. Don't you just luv surprises?

This show keeps growing and Growing and its gonna be a Great One. Better start making plans now, don't miss this one. I keep saying that, but this time is going to be a record setting show again.

Mike, I have a welcome mat with your name on it, anytime you want to come down, just drop in, we can always work in an extra player in the schedule, thats why there is no ending time either day. We are flexible, just like the ole road busses.

Have the upcoming Show in August and then one in November, then Feb and May.

In August 2005, will be the 75th Southern Steel Guitar Convention. We are already looking for Ideas on how to Celebrate. If we get enough response, might have to hold it outside for a Full Two Day Show. Still looking for suggestions, If anybody has any ideas, let us know.

Hey John...the Ga. gang may still be recuperating from our Sunday Shindig,,,,I truly appreciate them making the drive up here and I hope it was worth the trip....also all the other steelers that came from out of state (eight states represented)....IMHO Doug Jernigan's set was worth all the gold in California...when we finally got him out of the boat and took away BOTH of his fishing poles...Big Jim Vest and his model boats were truly amazing and the list goes on and on, but that's another post...I can't wait til August,,,see you then,

Russ
If this show gets any bigger we are going to have to do it two players at a time, or go to two full days.

I'm overwhelmed with the response, we have been getting from all levels of Talent and experience. Every player and donator's contribution to our events is really appreciated. When you have 70 shows under your belt like Buddy Walker and Charles Reece have, You have to be doing something right for it to be growing like it is.

This all adds up to more money for the Shriners Childrens Hospitals.

It has been humbling for me to be allowed to be a part of this and the support from a lot of my friends from my Nashville days is Heartwarming. I receive a lot more than I give at Saluda, especially in the way of being able to see my friends from present and former days four times a year every year.
I look forward to the day that I get to see everyone I knew in Nashburg come to Saluda.

We Shouldn't ever forget the Contrubution That Bobby Lee makes as operator of this forum, without him and this Forum, we wouldn't have a very good way of getting the word out to the people who support our events.

Bill Ferguson has asked the audiences at our events where they learned about us and the majority say its The Steel Guitar Forum. We always ask the Audiences to support our vendors at each and every one of our shows, I also ask that you Check out the merchandise that is for sale on this forum and support it as well as at our shows, without the forum, we would be shooting in the dark and not be able to continue our work for the Shriners Childrens Hospital at the level we are at now.
Thanks
John

I need to Mention Some of our strongest and most loyal supporters of the Southern Steel Guitar Convention

Bill Ferguson has been MC,ing this show since the days when his hair had color. He is another energizer bunny like Wayne Smith, he goes all day long and keeps this show moving along. This is a man that would be hard to replace with his knowledge of the players and easy way of communicating with each and every one of them.

Roger Crawford and Larry Moore are two guys that always step in and always do whatever needs to be done, filling in for Bill in a rare absence or just helping some other player getting set up when he needs it. We couldn't do without them. Roger has been known to sit in on drums when all the other drummers are flat worn out.

Rob Parker travels all the way from Kentucky to Play and Sing at our shows. Rob is known as the steel players best friend and as Clyde Bloodworth put it, "He keeps our fat out of the fire". Rob's wealth of knowledge of music and his catalog of songs span the entire spectrum of what is good in music. He has recorded every known good song with a who's who of steel players and sell these on CD and Tape at our shows to cover his travel expenses. We need to buy his merchandise so he can keep returning time after time.

Herby Wallace Comes down from Sevierville Tn each and every show and sets up a Large Display of merchandise related to steel guitar. Herby also plays at the Sunday Show and is one of the Highlights of the afternoon. He does this totally unpaid, as all of our supporters and players do just for the Support of the Shriners Childrens hospitals.

Yvonne Moore comes with her husband Larry and sets up her display of Jewelry and is our unofficial Chaplin. She is a shinning example of what Christian faith should be.

Joe Turner makes almost every show, a super player and always willing to help with anything he is asked to do, including the sound sometimes. I've seen Joe Play before the Headline players, after and during their performances. Joe turner is a picker thru and thru and a dadburned good one. One of the best guys you will ever meet.

Jim Hartley and Bob Strickland are two master musician regulars who are part of the staff band and if they aren't there, you know they must be sick or have a family emergency. No other reason could keep them away.

Wayne Williams is always the First Player up on Sunday Mornings and has the roughest spot all day long. He has to endure the soundman getting the mix zeroed in and When he starts, all of the staff band may or not be there and ready to play with him. He does this Flawlessly each and every time. He has a traditional Style very much like the early days of Pedal Steel guitar. He never complains and is always ready to pick. A Great guy in every respect.

These are just a few of the great folks and members of our Saluda Family that help out each and every show making Saluda the best unkept Secret since 1987 for over 70 shows.

WE COULDN'T DO WITHOUT THEM!!!

THANK YOU!!!

You left one out!!!!
How about that John Floyd guy? If you ask me, keeping the fire alive for this show is VERY important. Nobody gives information any clearer, any more upbeat, or has the best interest of the children in his heart - than JOHN FLOYD!! You play a HUGE role in the show's success, John because you inspire the players and their families. You roll out the carpet and welcome our red Georgia clay all over it - We love ya for that!!

Would you please Be quiet?
Dadburned Female, Can't take em anywhere!!

I ain't even half thru yet.

I was just taking a little rest,
I'm all tired out because my Ole Dawg ACE is having pups and I've been Boiling Water all day long, For what I don't know, but ain't that what you are supposed to do. I'm gonna keep one of the males and name him Timex,
I need a Cheap Watch...... Dawg

I need to add the Georgia Gang, Larry Moore (Stephen sez "HELLO"), Roger Crawford, Bill Nicholson, Clyde Bloodworth, Bill Cunningham, Jerry Braswell and some ole White Headed guy nanmed Dodd, Tony?, Toby?, Tommy?, yeah thats it, Tommy Dodd. He really knows how to light up a room in either one or two ways, He can take the easy way out and just bring Donna or he can pack up that bunch of hairy legged boys he calls Timeless Highway and fire up an Audience, Along With Brad, Mike and Johnny, they make up one driving band with a super sound. Mike Johnson is a Guitar Slinger second to none. They always leave the Audience yelling for more. Lets not forget Bill Ferguson's band Country River either, they are Tough to beat, Ole Bills Playing isn't too bad either

Ole Wayne Stowers, Theres a whole lot that can be said about him and I'd better not.

I probably left some out and I'm sorry that I'm getting old and forgetful.

And Donna I get as much red Clay on that welcome mat as any of you guys, I'm a Cracker too!

Ain't nuthin wrong with red clay, keep tracking it on our welcome mat and inside too if you guys want to, just keep coming back time and time again like you always do and have fun with us.

That is the Georgia Steel Guitar Association AKA The Georgia Mule Gang. We Couldn't do with out them either.

THANK YOU!!!

Ok John...we've just about caught our breath after getting back from Russ & Laney's place. What a marvelous host & hostess they are! That's a day I'll keep near and dear to my heart from now on. We've gone over all the check lists and everything is looking good. The Georgia Gang (aka GaSGA)seems to be all set and fired up about it. Hope the rest of the family is!

Roger
Wait until you see what Buddy has Done with the Sound. You won't have to trip over cables all over the stage anymore. I think we will have that to an absolute minimum now. The main speakers have been moved back closer to the stage They were mounted in the Ceiling , but a little too far out in front and Two of the monitors are mounted on the back of the main speakers facing downward toward stage and we have a new Soundroom. All thanks to Buddy, some donators and volunteers.
We are trying to make things a lot better and smoother running for the players and the Audience. Ain't much of the Southern Steel Guitar Convention that needed improvement, It has been close to perfection for a long time, We are just doing a little tweaking to improve a couple of rough spots.

BTW
Congratulations on becoming Pres. Of the GASGA.

I need to have a word with that Russ Hicks, dunno what he's up to but he is working our guys to death. I personally think he is trying to steal our Staff Band.

John,
Did I know that you were a true Cracker?? That is very cool! My mother was from North Carolina - and HER mother was full blooded Cherokee Indian. Daddy was a real Georgia Cracker. I guess that makes me a Tar Heel Cracker who sometimes gets "two tents". Get it???

Now where did I put those skunks, I've lost them again.

This is gonna be a great Show! and with the way this one is shaping up, it won't be too far in the future when we have to go beyond the one day show on Sundays, maybe a day and a half event starting on Saturday nights, just thinking out loud a little. The response to The Southern Steel Guitar Convention by all musicians is amazing. Don't anyone ever tell me that Musicians are hard nosed and don't have a heart. They keep coming back time and time again to help us raise funds for the Shriners Childrens hospitals. There is always something Special going on in Saluda 4 times a year.

Musicians are very special people who invest considerable money and effort into their craft and most of the time they are grossly underpaid. When they keep coming to Saluda to volunteer their time to help the Shriners Childrens hospitals. That speaks Volumes for their Character and what really great people they are.

Two of the finest musicians and real people are Russ and Laney Hicks, they are out there on the front lines of promoting Country Music and Steel Guitar week after week after week. Russ Hicks doesn't only work hard himself, he also gets others involved. I think he and Laney have been adopted by the GaSGA and have been presented with a Mule and wagon . Russ and Laney's work supporting the ISGCHOF is unbelieveable, I listened to a show on Steel Guitar.Com in St Louis where Russ and Laney had driven all night long from West Virginia to St Louis to do a benefit for the Hall of Fame. I could tell that both of them were exhausted, they had a little shaky start, shook it off like true professionals, went down deep and got their second wind and put on one hell of a show. This is Real Dedication. I think its about time his plaque is up on that wall in St Louis. Unfortunately they don't put wives in the SGHOF, maybe when Russ gets inducted, it will be time to make an exception.

We have between 17 and 20 players expected for this upcoming show There are 5 of National renown and 2 more yet unconfirmed.
While this may seem like a lot of players, I'd rather have too many than not enough. Actually there is no such thing as too many players! We will make time for each and every one. As it stands right now, we may go to around 7 PM on Sunday, We will get every one on who wants to play. That is a Saluda Tradition.

WOW!!! What a response to our invitations!!!

While we have had to go up on the Admission for the Sunday Shows, We are also trying to give more entertainment for the money.

Don't miss this Show, We are already looking out to August of next year for the 75th Show for a line up 2nd to none.

Saluda is going to get better and better, As if you could improve on something as good as The Southern Steel Guitar Convention at Saluda, We are trying!

Oh yeah, I want everybody to Whoop and Holler when a Player hits a hot lick or plays something real purty.

Steelers Just Luv this and it makes them work harder and Harder.

I have some Good News!

Charles Reece continues to improve from his surgery. There's no doubt that he will be at this show, and may be able to play, with a little help from a Few of his friends, Bill Ford and David Christmas have volunteered to get his guitar to the Show and set up.

Another good reason to not miss this 71st Southern Steel Guitar Convention.
