James Hand & Tommy Alverson Info

I just heard both of these guys on Willie's Place last night and thought they sounded great.

I checked out there web sites and am interested in buying some of their CD's.

Any recommendations on which of their releases are best and which have good steel on them?

Any help would be be appreciated!

I like James Hand's "Evil Things" CD. That one has some nice playing on it. If I remember correctly Ricky Davis is playing steel on that one.

I'm surprised at the lack of responses otherwise, I guess these guys really are not well know although they have both been around for many years.

Craig, I agree about James Hand. Some pretty good stuff. Good song writing and unique voice. I also discovered him on Willies Place. I like "The Truth Will Set You Free".

I think James first 2 albums are Out of Print.
I would recomend "The Truth Will Set you Free"
James is among the artests around Austin who has been seen on "Friday Night Lights.

James was our top artest on "Bus Of Real Country in 2009 including a strong showing for Don't Want Me Too" and What Little I Got Left".

James is as Country as you can get, if you like Hank sr, you'll love James Hand, played with him on the 4th of July, job I won't forget....

I just saw & heard James Hand for the first time on RFD TV. I'd heard his name before, but not his music. I immediately picked up the "Hank influence", but there appears to be a lot more to his music than that. I felt like there is something in his music that I would describe as "intense". After reading the discussion here I went to his website and checked it out. I listened to some song clips and ordered the CD produced by Ray Benson and Lloyd Maines.

I will say this, some of the songs James writes, I do believe are some of life's experiences...he's the real deal when it comes to ol Country...

Thanks for the updated comments on this post. I stopped my Sirius subscription and didn't order any CD's since I was busy at the time I made the post. I am now going to get some of his stuff, I need something new and different to listen to.

Just can't seem to stop playing "I've Got A Lot Of Hiding Left To Do" by James Hand. He really channels Hank Senior. Lloyd Maines on steel.

Ray Austin plays steel for Tommy. Great player E9 and C6.

I really like the latest James Hand CD, I've had it for several months. I just saw this thread.

James is the real deal. That's great that you got to play with him, David. Wish I could have been there for that one. I guess there's something to be said for moving to Texas!

And you guys are killing me again with the "Hank Senior" - that's like scraping fingernails across a chalkboard.

It's simply Hank. The "Jr." and the "III" are the ones that require the designation after "Hank"
