Suggestions For The Hall Of Fame This Year?

Hi,I'm Trying to accomodate my schedulle to go to st louis this year but I guess it's gonna be difficult,so,I like to start this topic as a form to be there.( I don't know if someone starts a topic like this yet )
Ok here are two great players of different's era's that I love and I think aren't in the hall of fame yet :

Dan Dougmore

Roy Smeck

Anny suggetions ?

Sonny Curtis. Steel player for George Jones and Tammy Wynette,Studio Musician,Former Music Store Owner and Sho-Bud dealer.Certainly is deserving of such a distinction in my book.

Edited to add : He also plays the tuning backwards.....open in A6 and pedals down in E9 ! How wild is that ? Not to mention that when I was a snot nosed aspiring musician...Sonny used to run me out of his shop after he answered about a million of my questions ! If it weren't for Sonny's Guitar Shop...I would have never have learned how to be the Hair Metal god that I was ! Well,I lost some of my hair,but hey,I made up for it by driving myself crazy learning this crazy contraption we call Pedal Steel Guitar ! All of that from the guy that was the steel player from the Jones/Wynette show. I am sure that a lot of other guys will chime in here as well.

Also, Bobbe would be another good choice. He should have been in a long time ago !

All of this is great, but the HOF Inductees for this year, by now, have all been selected and the bronze plaques either made or in the process of being made.

I know the year Roy Ayres was inducted, he knew about it several months in advance (but they keep the names of the Inductees secret so it's a surprise at the ISGC).

When they put Garcia in they might as well add that other out of tune player, Toy Caldwell. I would rather see Garrish,Hilton,or maybe even Mandrell.

Although I'm not a fan of Garcia, he did influence a lot of new pedal steel guitar players. Others have been inducted into the HOF on one song so he qualifies on that point.

This year's inductees were voted in last September at the convention by the Board.

The SGHOF nomination criteria can be met by many. Nomination is not a guarantee of induction. The documentation required for induction is daunting and will take a fair amount of time to compile. You will need the assistance of the nominee (if living) to ease the load.

Throwing out names on the forum will not produce the desired result. More information here:

Oh yes, it's nice to pick your favorite players, your friends, and the guys who play so well. But how about the guys that started it all?

How about these guys?

Frank Ferara - Who reputedly introduced the Hawaiian steel guitar to the mainland United States, around the beginning of the 20th century.

Arthur Harmon - Whose "Hawaiian Harmolin" was probably the first guitar invented with tone-changing capabilities. He patented his knee-lever equipped acoustic lap steel in 1932.

Jay Harlin - The man most credited with adding foot pedals to a console steel, thereby creating the pedal steel guitar.

To me, overlooking them in a "Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame" is a little like overlooking the Wright Brothers in an aviation hall of fame, or an aviation museum...which (fortunately) I don't believe has ever happened.

I still think that Ron Lashley Sr. should be in there; but I'm not going to go all that again, getting the anthology together like I did before. I hope that they still have it somewhere and someday will give him his place.

Bill Ferguson should be there for his contribution to the steel guitar community with his promotion of the instrument with his nice videos of great players. His work has allowed many people to see players in action that they would not have otherwise. Doing a quick and dirty video is one thing, but Bill's work is edited to present a professional, informative, and entertaining video for everyone to see. Add to all this, Bill is a super player himself, does excellent work in the band setting, and he plays it country.
