The guitar player in the band I worked in last night told of an incident that just happened a couple days ago where a friend of his along with is Mother, Sister, and Sweetheart went to Nashville to make some connections with the music industry. As the story goes, he was on Lafayette St and needed some directions. As he stopped the vehicle to inquire, 4 young/teenage hoodlums approached the vehicle told them this was a robbery. At this point, the young man who was driving started to reach for his wallet and the teenager put a gun to his chest and shot him, killing him instantly.
We are having a benefit for the young man Sunday evening at the New South Club that is located approximately 2 or 3 miles east of LaGrange N.C. on Hwy 70.
This is not an attempt to solicit funds but to make any one that does not know Nashville aware of the dangers when you get lost and need directions. I agree this can and is a problem in any city you are in and you need to ask for assistance.
As I said before this is not to solicit any funds but, I am sure the family would be very thankful for any help should anyone want to donate anything.

According to the interviews with the family, mom was driving, sister in the back seat and the young man was in the passenger seat. They pulled into a vacant parking lot. He was the one who asked for directions and was shot in the neck and died before they could get to a hospital. Haven't caught the scum bags but were supposed to have been four teenage blacks.
Where this happened was not off the beaten path, just a few blocks from Broad where 8th ave. splits off onto Lafayette ave. south.Bad part of town...part of the projects. Its a shame when you need information about where not to go in Music City.I have lived here since 1968 and there was a time when the worst thing that could happen was to be approached by a whino asking for a quarter on Lower Broad and if you refused they didn't shoot you.

On the night he was shot and killed, 28-year-old Kristopher Carlyle was doing what he loved best.
He'd just had supper with his mother and sister at a Sonic Drive-In on Murfreesboro Pike, and they then decided to head downtown so Carlyle could sing and play guitar at Riverfront Park.
The aspiring country singer frequently played downtown with his guitar case open for tips, his family said yesterday.
On their way downtown Wednesday night, the family got lost in south Nashville, and Carlyle was shot by a teenager who robbed the family at gunpoint after three other teens stepped in the car's path.
His mother, Kathy Smith, sobbed yesterday as she described her frantic efforts to find the nearest hospital and save her son's life after he was shot.
''Whatever he did, I always worried about him, and there I was with him, and I still couldn't help him,'' said Smith, weeping uncontrollably as she described the shooting. ''It was all so fast, and there was blood everywhere. I just can't get it out of my mind. I can still see his face. I wish it had been me instead of my baby boy.''
Smith, 45, who was visiting her son from Kinston, N.C., said she doesn't know her way around Nashville and got lost as the family tried to find their way back to the interstate.
Carlyle had moved to Nashville just two months ago to pursue his dream and didn't know the city very well, either, she said in a telephone interview yesterday from her brother's house in Cary, N.C.
The shooting occurred about 10:30 p.m. as the family drove on Lafayette Street near First Avenue South, searching for an onramp.
With Smith behind the wheel, Carlyle in the passenger seat, and his sister, Kandice Smith, 18, and her boyfriend in the back seat, the family slowed to look for road signs, Smith said.
Three teens then stepped in front of the car to block their path. Smith stopped, and Carlyle asked them how to get to the interstate, she said. The teens told them to pull into a nearby parking area, and Smith said she pulled off the road to get out of the way of traffic.
At that point, a fourth teen, whom police have identified as Twain Demario Vaughn, 15, of Carroll Street, stepped out with a gun and demanded money, according to Metro police reports.
Carlyle handed the teens $10, Smith said, and the teen then pointed the gun at her daughter in the back seat and demanded money. When she said she didn't have any money, the teen then aimed the gun at Carlyle's neck and demanded more money.
Fearing for her family's safety, Smith said, she decided to flee, and her son was shot as she sped away.
Vaughn was arrested Thursday night when he came to police headquarters with his family, police said. The other teens involved in the incident have not yet been identified by police.
After the shooting, Smith said, she flashed her lights at other motorists to get them to stop, and finally jumped out of her car and stepped into the path of an oncoming car. The man who was driving showed them the way to Metro General Hospital at Meharry, the family said.
Smith said she drove to the hospital as she held her son's head upright and pleaded with him not to leave her.
Carlyle died as the family pulled into the hospital parking lot, family members said yesterday.
Smith, her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend had been visiting Carlyle for the week and were planning to go back to North Carolina on Thursday.
Carlyle's aunt, Joy Coombs, and cousin, Melissa Adams, flew to Nashville on Thursday as soon as they heard about the shooting.
As they sat in their hotel room yesterday before flying back to North Carolina, they described Carlyle as a practical joker who had a big heart and the voice of a country star — even if he hadn't yet achieved that status.
Coombs said Carlyle had tried to call her just 10 minutes before the shooting but she was in bed. She said she still has his voice-mail message telling her he wished she was there and that he loved her.
''If I'd just answered the phone, I would have been talking to him instead of him getting shot,'' she said. ''He sounded real loud and real happy, just real jubilant about it all.''
Carlyle joined the U.S. Navy after he graduated from high school, and it was during that time that he discovered karaoke, Coombs said.
From that point on, she said, his main goal was to become a country singer. He played local gigs in Kinston with his band and tended bar at a billiards club to support himself.
Since moving to Nashville in May, he had been working for a plumbing company and had rented a house in Old Hickory, the family said.
He also had recorded a CD of his new songs before he moved from Kinston and was hoping to sign on with a record company here, family members said.
''He wanted to be like George Strait, and he even used George Strait shampoo and conditioner and wore George Strait shirts,'' Coombs said. ''He would have made it, too.''
Now, Smith said, she's trying to figure out how she can go on living without being able to laugh at his jokes, listen to his beautiful voice, and hear him at the other end of the phone saying, ''Hey baby, what's up?''
She flew home yesterday on the same flight that carried her son's body home.
''I just wanted to make sure he made it back all right,'' she said. ''I always had to make sure he was OK.''
Memorial fund
A memorial fund for Kristopher Carlyle's family to help pay funeral expenses has been set up through the Bank of America. Donations can be made at any Bank of America branch under Carlyle's name.

This is a prime example why capital punishment needs to be implemented for murder. This kind of scum need to be wiped out. The authorities needs to investigate whether this was racially motivated against white people. Maybe Federal bias laws apply. Someone needs to organize a protest march in that neighborhood letting this kind of scum know that they do not own the streets. What a shame, what a waste. This 15-year-old shouldn't have been out on the street, nor should his "bros." And what was a 15 year old doing with a gun?? I guess I've lived in the country too long, but I believe if there had been a good MAN in this kid's life, with a good leather belt, this might not have happened. My little town has groups of these punks(I refuse to call them "gangs," since that's what they seem to prefer), walking the street, pants about to fall off, caps turned around backward, needing a good old ass whipping. And there ain't no Daddy at home(if there is a home!)to put it on 'em! PLEASE, don't misunderstand, I'm not crying about the "poor 15-year-old, forced to commit murder." This kid should be tried as an adult, sentenced as an adult, and serve his sentence, all the while demanding "respec'."
This is too big of a problem in this country. Damir, that Glock looks impressive. I've got a S&W .38 Airweight in the glove box. Problem is, I REALLY don't want to shoot a kid. But I guess it's come to that, hasn't it. Now the courts will be tied up with another statistic, and a good family will bury a son.
My prayers for this country, and for what we've allowed it to become. |

I believe this was a crime of opportunity. Chris and his family just happened along at the wrong time. If anyone is interested, go to your search engine of choice (I like Google) and type in "Nashvile Murder" and when page is loaded, go about 3 or 4 lines to where it reads, WSMV Channel 4 "Tourist killed while asking directions." You will see a live 3 minute video of the investigation and an interview with the boys mother and sister and friends.

You all have blown it this time and BIG TIME!! I cannot recall a worse exhibtion of child-like behavior from what I've often thought of as mature (mostly)male adults here. I often refrain from posting here only because of this "piling on" which is usualy SO off-topic but frequent none the less on any of these boards. This time a tragedy is reported and apart from a few inquiries about the family or the situation proper the other posts are just as sad and tragic in their own way!
One speculates the shooter was black but how is THAT pertinent? Does skin color affect the family's grief? Why or how does that alone figure into our collective sadness at this senseless act? In the end it then seems the shooter was a white kid which again does NOT lessen this whole matter one bit!
Then if that minor gaffe isn't enough the "good ole boys" amongst us post photos of their own firearms or them at the firing range and then go on to "offer" to pay these punks and thugs a visit so as to take their own retribution or revenge. C'mon "men"---grow the he** UP--plesase?!?!? I don't care how many cops you've been or what your background is--I have my own background and/or beliefs in matters like this but don't feel this time, this place is the forum for that! (Feel free to email me direct for more on this if you desire---just do NOT post more of these BS "replies" here!)
There is NOTHING suitable to be said in THIS public forum other than a sincere expression from all of us who share any grief at this stupid, cowardly, senseless anti-social behavior. You'd think the almost instant questions would be "where can I contribute OR how can I help"?? Adding to this with the Old West "eye for an eye" mentality ( I KNOW it's a Biblical reference!) shows a terrific lack of focus on no less than a million problems BUT also immediately detracts from this sad, sad thing. It happens in every town most every day but this was posted in a well meaning manner and should be shown that same respect---I believe that word was thrown out earlier?--too bad it's not offered accordingly here as well.
Make NO MISTAKE----there is NOTHING bad enough that can be heaped upon this dumb-a**ed POS that I'd not be first in line to perform---and I DO mean not one thing---nothing!! I abhor any kind of violence played upon INNOCENT people and would also want to be first in line to drop the trap door ten seconds after any goof was found "guilty beyond a reasonable doubt" regardless the "mitigating factors" which may or may NOT be pertinent. That being said, the non-sense added here really REALLY makes a few look quite backward and could give rise to some specualtion where your minds are----NOT in the event originally posted!
Enough said---let's send our condolences and whatever else we can spare to those who need our compassoin and NOT our "hitman" wishes. Flame me as needed!
Sincerely, J W Alexander, Columbus/Reynoldsburg, Ohio |

This is sad news. My heart and prayers go out to his family. I'll second Kevin on the CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. That's what's wrong in this country, to much wrist slapping for crimes. If there still were public hangings
alot of this stuff wouldn't be happening. It's too the point were the crooks have more rights than the victims and that makes me want too throw-up!!

There is no way a 15 year old can get a handgun permit.
FACT
He Stole it.!
FACT
Tougher gun laws will not solve problems like this.
I'll bet he wouldn't have tried this in Kennesaw Georgia. [This message was edited by John Floyd on 11 July 2004 at 05:18 PM.] |
