Damir,
I was lucky enough to get to play in Beograd and Novi Sad a few years back with a country(ish) band called Speedbuggy USA. Those folks loved the steel guitar and the music we brought to them.
Played in Croatia also. Great fun and memories.
I'll forward you an email a frind of mine sent me. I think it is a review of their last tour(sans me).
Right on

Hi Jordan,
I got your email.Like I said in my replay, they loved the band and they are happy to see you again (I think they said that speedbuggy is coming back) they also said that the band will be this time without a steel???Is that correct? However, all together what I can see from that column is that you guys did a great job and everyone had a great time.If you can Jordan, post some pics for us on here, mine didn`t get thru in the email.
Sincerely,Damir |

Do Serbians play traditional Serbian music, or any folk music on modern instruments? |

Earnest, they play their folk music and main instrument is accordion.I don`t care about accordion but they are the masters of the instrument. If you ever have a chanse to hear some of their folk music on accordion you will love it.It is unbeliavable what they can do with accordion. It does not sound nothing like Austrian accordion style. It`s way more faster and way more complicated to play.

That is one of the most profound things I have read anywhere.
You are right about the accordian in the hands of a master. Belgium accordianist Ludovic Beier must be heard to be believed. He plays Gypsy Jazz. If you think the accordian is a wussy instrument, you'd be blown away by this guy.
