I think Rusty needs to front the band and, especially when they go out as a trio, he couldn't really sustain that all night sitting behind the steel. For the general music fan (and not the steel guitar fans) he shows great versatility and the band gets lots of musical different textures. But lots of people can strum a mandolin and he's one of the all-time great country-rock pedal steelers.

Been listening to a lot of Poco lately (thanks to this thread) and only just realized Rusty was using a wah-wah along with the Leslie speaker sound on "Hurry Up" from the second album. Can't recall hearing that combination since.
