| Anybody own or played through the NEW Standel tube amps? They make the 6L6 as well as the 6550/KT88 version. Danny sent me a few pics, and they are beautiful amps. |

They are wonderful to play through. With 4 6L6's there is a ton of headroom. I have a pair of these amps that are about 6 years old now.
I had the JBL D130's (15's) re-coned after about 4 years. The amps came with vintage virgin 16 ohm speakers at my request, and sadly, the paper cones finally bit the dust.
Danny is a great guy to do business with. |

| I've had a 25L15 reissue ( serial # 26 )for 10 years now, couldn't be happier with it. With its' 25 ( real ) watts it's probably not your everyday pedal steel amp, but then again, that's not what I'm looking for. A quad 6L6 version would be the ultimate steel amp probably, the beefy output tranny is what really sets these amps apart from others. It's also extremely well built, and very durable. A guitar with a Bigsby PU's through one of these babies is just something else. |

Just my personal opinion, but I'd steer away from the 2 x 6L6 25L15. I've played through several -- both original and re-issue -- and they are great for that tube sound in the studio but for most live gigs where a guitar player is twangin' a Tele thru a Twin, it's just a bit anemic, especially for steel.
I played a couple of gigs with a local guitarist who had just bought one and dropped more than $4K on it after he added reverb and bought a road case. He was using a 2 x 12 Peavey tube amp with it. My 1970 solid state Standel (by itself -- 120W RMS) stood up quite nicely. 'Nuf said.
I'd like to try one of the 4 x 6L6 amps -- I think they're rated at 100W. That may be closer to a Twin in power. Everything Bob Crooks designed sounds great.

| Buddy's Standel has 6550's in it. Bobbe Seymore has the same amp as Buddy's except it has 6L6's. |

this is one thing thats always baffled me - you see photos of these bands from the 40-60's on stage with one 25watt amp, just minimal stuff with no individual mics, just a minimal set up and they played these big halls, schools, gyms, drive-ins, theaters, etc with that - heck the Beatles played Shea stadium with single Vox AC-30s yet somehow people think that playing your neighborhood bar that has a 150 people max capacity requires everyone to have at least 100w amps. i dont think i'd even want to play in a band where everyone had 100w amps. i understand the need for steel players to have that power, as they are using the VP to cut 1/2 of the power though.
btw - on ebay about 4-5 months ago, a guy was selling a walnut cab standel with a matching extension cab AND road case and it only went for $2800. it was BEAUTIFUL - some famous flaminco (sp?) guitarist had it custom made - boy i wanted that one but i would be afraid to even take it out of the house.

Interesting, I have a pair of 6550's in my 25L15. I chose them instead of the original 807 configuration since quality 6550's are easier to find here than 807's. I've had a NOS GE pair since day one and a pair of Svetlanas as a back up. I also managed to acquire NOS Mullards ( British military rated) in the pre amp section and a Mullard rectifier tube too. Looking at the prices of those tubes on ebay now, I'm glad I got'em years ago! |

Boy, you said it. I collected a few pairs of Jan Philips 7581A and 6L6 quads a few years ago before they skyrocketed. I would do pretty good if I ebayed them now. |
