I will be leaving Maine to go to Rhode Island Tomorrow Morning. I will be playing along with Tony Posha who has been playing for 59 years at the Americn legion Post 15 in East Greenwich R.I.tomorrow night to start and then Sunday the 4th I will be going to Portsmouth R.I. around 3 in the afternoon to Manny Escobars home for a fine cook out and play steel with about 6 to 7 other steel players along with a band and a lot of diffrent singers. Music starts at 5 PM and at 9 PM the lights go out and then one great fire works diplay.Manny is a fine steel player and he has this affair every year and I will not miss it for nothing. There will be over two hundred people there we all bring a dish of some kind of food or sweets.Hope you all have a great 4th of july like we do.

Not to throw cold water on July 4th, but I gotta wonder how many folks in the US realized that July 1st was CANADA DAY...a day just as important here in Canada as July 4th is to the US. Up here in Canada, while we are not a flag waving populance, we are fiercly loyal to a great country. Canada is the #1 customer to the US surpassing that of Japan, and also the #1 supplier of oil to the US surpassing the middle east. Just for your information. |

Hi Herman and all my American friends...yes, Alberta is a truly GREAT province. We could be referred to as the "TX" of Canada as our oil fields are vast. Not only did Canada sire Hank Snow, think about Oscar Petersen, Leslie Nielson, Jim Carey, Diana Krall, Wilf Carter, and the list goes on and on. Americans would do well to spend their vacations north of the 48th. The summers "average" around 75f and winters "average" around 25f. Your $$$$
go much farther in Canada also ! |

As good as it gets!
I played from noon to 3 at the park in Willits where the parade ends. Big barbeque event, lots of kids, etc. Then I hightailed it back to Cloverdale for a 5 to dusk gig in a backyard, right next to the football field. More barbeque. We played our last song, someone sang the National Anthem on the field, and the fireworks started.
Weather was nice and hot in the sun, comfortable in the shade. As perfect a 4th as any I can remember.

Hey Happy 1st George and I hope everyone had a great Forth of July. It was a real blast at Manny Escobars Home in Portsmouth R.I. We had plenty to drink and eat. The fire works were awsome and there were 5 steel players and we had a ball.
Thank you Manny and Elaine for the great time.

George Keoki,
The name Wilf Carter leaped off the monitor at me.
I've been playing/singing this song recorded by Gordon Lightfoot and written by Steve McGowen for a year or so, now:
"I Used To Be A Country Singer"
The chorus/refrain of the song goes:
..."I used to be a country singer
I could sing a mean Patsy Cline
My husband he could yodel like
Wilf Carter
Kitty Wells was a real good
friend of mine"...
Never new, and still don't, about Wilf Carter.
For a while, thought GL was singing "Will Carter". Then got the lyrics together, and there you are.
Great song, and I'm sure Wilf is too; what with even being part of a song, as well as mentioned in the same breath with Patsy Cline and Kitty Wells.

Well guys, Wilf Carter left us a number of years ago. During his career, he also sang in the US and took the name "Montana Slim". Some of you might have those old recordings. He was a good yodeler and had a great country voice. I think he died about 5 years ago, not sure. |

According to the handy-dandy All Music Guide, Wilf Carter, aka Montana Slim, died in December 1996, just a couple of weeks shy of his 92nd birthday; he was elected to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971. There's a great bio on him at the All Music Guide -- just click this link, type in "Wilf Carter," and that should do the trick... |
