I was just over at Cal's house the other
day and that subject came up and he told us
that was his real name. "Calvin Grant Shoffner". He also told us a few Charlton stories which was awsome. Cal is a great guy aside from being a legend.
his health is not to good . he said he is in the first stages of (As he say's) "Alltimers" Smile and his breathing isnt that great either. however he does walk around the block every morning and he cuts some of the older folks grass in his community. but he says he is slowing down with that.if any of you fellas wanna pass a message along to Cal I would be glad to print it out and drop it by his house. im sure he would love hearing from some of you fellers
from days gone by ..

I don't know how many times I've been called Cal Smith since I've been in Nashville, a bunch. Even been introduced on stage like that.

I was at the Union picking up my Opry check and Cal's drummer, Don Mills, was there picking up Cal's check and they gave him mine.

I was in Branson, working with Faron, and Cal called the room, wanting to speak to our bass owner, Ray.
Me: Hello?
Cal: Ray?
Me: Cal. (I recognized his voice.)
Cal: No, this is Cal.
Me: No, this is Cal.
Pause...
Cal: Is Ray there?
Me: Ray's not here, man! (Remember Cheech & Chong?)
And so on...

He sang with us on the show later and we all had a big ol' time.

Cal Sharp is my real name, as far as anyone knows.

I'm not real sure but I think the Hoffman Hayride was produced on the West Coast possible on the old DUMONT network in the late forties. Hoffman was a pioneer in early Television Sets. It had a kind of glareproof screen.

I sort of remember the band might have been DUDE MARTIN from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Y'all are right of course. Re: Boo's post....even though it shows him in San Antonio , that would be a long walk to Hollister , Mo. Be sure and catch Lisa's show Sat night on RFD. It comes on right after Marty Stuart.
Billy...good man. Hoffman Hayride was my first intro to Cal Smith who I thought [at the time] sounded like Hank Thompson. There were some great characters from those days...guys like Cottonseed Clark and Blackjack Wayne. Jimmy Webb was playing country bass back then....the same Jimmy who built those wonderful amps. We would gather around a 9 inch television screen with a green tint and wouldn't miss any of those shows. Them were some good days.
