Just wondering if anyone knew what kind of wood(s) Valco used for its various steels? Every one I've picked up is light, but still resonant.

Hi Peter,

I am curious about this too. One of my beloved 1930s New Yorkers have some paint worn off - I will post a pic when I get home for the wood experts.

This one (1961) is poplar. About 25% of the poplar I see (I work in a shop that sells wood) wouldn't be suitable - it can vary quite a bit in density and stiffness - some boards are light and soft and make a dull thud when you tap them but much of it is stiff and rings nicely. Great for painting or veneering, not a great wood for staining. Very easy wood to work with. Inexpensive and sustainable too.

Thanks, Mark -- I have a Supro just like the one in your photo (mine's a '64, I believe). It sounds incredible -- much of that is the pickkup, of course, but I'm sure the wood plays a big part, too. Poplar makes sense -- it can be light, but is a good sounding body wood for electric guitars.
