"Sponge Bob" steeler Gary Brandin = Musical Genius

Post by Eddie Cunningham »

I had visited Pa. to help our Daughter with new baby and 4 yr. old granddaughters broken arm so I got to watch a LOT of T.V. and it seems "Sponge Bob" is on T.V. all the time !! Gary Brandin does the steel background music for most all the stories playing Hawaiian style music and his playing is SOOO Good !!! I believe he plays on a mid 50s DW-16 D-8 Rickenbacher console steel. If you like old Hawaiian style playing tune in and give Gary a listen !!! He sounds GREAT !!! You will like it !!! Eddie "C"

Hi Ed,
You're so right, Babysitting has its rewards. I've been watching Sponge Bob for a while now! It's great when the Steel comes in. Call me some morning.

Our grandchildren were watching Sponge Bob the other day and Roy said, listen to the steel guitar, I said I know, he's on the forum. Our grandchildren even had their picture taken with Sponge Bob! I have watched him many, many times with them and it is a funny show plus the steel guitar background is awesome! Laurie

Yeah, my kids (all teenagers now) were big Sponge Bob fans a few years ago. When I heard the steel I enjoyed coming on the Forum to find out who it was. Gary does a great job conjuring up that vintage Hawaiian steel vibe. :)

Aha! I was just going to post this question elsewhere, but since we have Gary on the line right here, I hope you don't mind if I put this here:

I'm just learning steel (have picked up both pedal and lap steel), and I'm not yet practiced enough to be able to easily distinguish tunings by ear.

Could you please tell me what tuning you use on the title track to "In the Dark"?

Also, is Tikiyaki Orchestra going to release their version of "Endless Summer" on their next CD? I saw the youtube videwo for that and just adore that groove :-)

Gary also plays great on a couple beautiful P/P's. And, more important, he's a really good guy.

Gwyneth, on the song "In The Dark" I'm using a 8 string C6th tuning with the G on top. They put the wrong name on the song done by the 'Tikiyaky Orchestra'. It should be "The Last Days of Summer", written, and recorded by the 'Blue Hawaiians'.

Thanks for the kind words, Peter.
