Dwight, the front apron mica can be slid out and another color slid in much like a dishwasher front panel. You just remove one corner of the end plate.
However, the top deck requires the usual removal of all parts and is held with adhesive.

Thanks Jerry, I have a D-10 keyless that I wanted to change colors and I was wondering if I could also insert the laquered wood piece. Do you know anything about the laquer being able to fit inside the front panel?

Dwight, I don't know if you can order a maple front from BMI or not. I know you can get them on a new guitar. You can use your mica panel for size pattern, plane the board down to about 3/8" thick, use a roundover bit to round the edge and leave a 1/8" (check for exact thickness) thick extreme edge that slides into the channel on front of the guitar.

Dwight, here's a shot of my BMI S-12. It was originally all black mica but I took the front piece off and just went to Lowe's home center and bought a strip of Oak veneer and lightly stained it and added a piece of decorative molding. I love it and always get good remarks from other musicians and fans about how nice it looks. I just glued the strip on the guitar with contact cement. I rounded all the edges off a little also........JH in Va.

Here is my 1981 Custom Birdseye maple D12 BMI.
The front Birdseye panel does indeed slide into place just as the mica finished guitars do.

Very nice Jerry. I had the same idea as you but I want that OEM fit. My S-12 is similar to yours, but with 4ped 4knee. I also have a D-10 keyless double changer.

My front panel is factory installed. I did slide it out a few times when cleaning the guitar. Piece of cake!

I might well be wrong but I think Don is outsourcing the maple wood fronts. He of course does the mica panels. Again, I could be wrong on the wood fronts.

OEM is a term I learned when I use to race motorcycles. Original Equipment Manufactured.
