I got it for under 250. Even though it's a "no name" brand it looks exactly like a pre war gibson with a "motel soap bar" pickup. I had to jump on it to check this thing out. Any info or thoughts would be appreciated.

That looks like a DiArmond pickup, same as those used in the 1950s Harmony Stratotones. Rick Holmstrom, Tom Waits and John Hammond Jr. use those. I've got one in a Harlin Brothers MultiKord, and it's got a lot of mojo to it.

Search SGF and the old SGF archives for > Epitome < (lap steels and amps). There's some info about Guldan, a piano & violin company that made a zillion Epitome's for the pre and post WWII Hawaiian Guitar teaching craze; ...The best I could determine they were distributed / sold (?) mostly by some Music Teachers guild (forgot the name, ....out of California if I remember correctly).

Tom's right; Those pickups have allot of mojo and cover a very broad range of tones / styles, ....just remember what the pre-amp gain and volume controls on the amp are for !

These were apparently made by the Jackson Guldan Company of Columbus, Ohio. The company was better known as a violin maker, but dabbled in Hawaiian guitars as well. I see these every so often on the internet, but have no information on the company or its models.

Thanks guys for the help. I'm curious about the bridge on this Guldan because it's the same as the Gibson. Was there a company that manufactured the bridges for different steel guitar companies back in the days?
