In order for the most people to have a chance at buying a ticket for the raffle of the Walker Seat, Buddy has decided to start the Sale of Raffle tickets at 1 PM, Sunday, Fifty tickets only at $10 each.

The tickets have already been printed , so the amount of tickets will not change. These will go fast, there will be a 1 in 50 chance of leaving Saluda with a beautiful New Walker Seat, having invested only $10 in it. But no other instrument would ever replace the Hawaiian Guitar in my heart and soul! Jerry Byrd, Alvino Rey and Curly Chalker have had the most influence on my efforts. I can play the six string guitar somewhat but not to the extent that anyone would notice. I am married, with two children. Both grown and they live in Huntsville, Alabama, girl and boy. No grandchildren. I was playing with little groups all during high school. Graduated from Gulfport High School in 1949. Joined the Navy. After the Korean war, I was discharged and then played with a lot of unknown talent in and around Mississippi at that time. Elvis Presley was a summer visitor to our home when we were kids. We would play at the local grocery store for baloney sandwiches and root beer and sometimes on a Wednesday night we would be paid $ 7.50 each to play for the airmen at the Air force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. A few others went on to become big, big stars such as Jim Reeves, Hank Williams and a few others. I went back into the Navy in 1957 after a year at Miss. State College. Played my guitar all over the world then when the ships pulled into various ports. My job in the Navy was in the underwater detection business because of my passing a tone/pitch exam when I enlisted. I became a Sonarman. Loved it too. Retired from the Navy in 1973. Went on tour with Marty Martel and Johnny Duncan for a while. Went to work at the big local shipyard as a Senior Engineer in the Test & Trials section of the Combat Systems for the construction of those new Aegis Cruisers. Worked there for too many years, then went to Saudi Arabia as a consultant in the operation/maintenance of that country's naval academy school system. Glad I am back home now and can concentrate full time on my guitar. I had a "homemade" double ten in the late fifties and early sixties. In ' 73 I had another "homemade" double twelve and that led me to my S-14 concept. Just simple evolution.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Herby Wallace has been one of the strongest Supporters of The Southern Steel Guitar Convention around. When he misses a show and its seldom that he does, he is really missed.
I tried to find a bio on Herby, but I couldn't locate one. So I decided to Post his SGHOF Plaque on here

Herby always has a super Display of Merchandise and has all the Neat toys.

I probably will sleep in it for a few nights.

This has been a goal of mine for some time to become a shriner. Every time I had an opportunity in NC the Saluda Show was scheduled and it looked like it was going to work out that way for several years to come. So thanks to Buddy Walker, It appears like it will happen in Simpsonville SC this Saturday April 24th. I will be petitioning the Saluda Shrine Club to become a member of it and become an official part of the Southern Steel Guitar Convention and helping My brothers and good friends, Buddy Walker and Charlie Reese, a couple of great men.

There's not enough being said about what these two guys have accomplished.

This will be their 70th show !!! No one has ever produced that many shows.

Can you imagine how many thousands of Dollars have gone to the Childrens hospitals because of their efforts.

How many people have been to Saluda and saw a bad show, none that I have ever heard of.

How many people have been to these shows and decided to learn to play steel guitar, Quite a few I can imagine.

We have a lot to celebrate at this May Show and I hope you all come out to enjoy a Great Show and help us celebrate.

We also have a lot to reflect on too.
Jeff Newman was the last person to perform at Saluda and he is no longer with us, Jeff was one of the Strongest supporters of the Southern Steel Guitar Convention. We will certainly miss him, Nobody can ever replace Jeff in our minds. He was a legend and one of a kind. His last show at Saluda was special and was sort of quiet, with some beautiful music played on it. I have a recording of that show, the quality isn't the best and I will be sending it to Fran Newman and it is hers to do with in whatever way she sees fit.[This message was edited by John Floyd on 22 April 2004 at 02:24 AM.]

Thanks I would like that, I tried to get my daughter to come, but the US Coast Guard has other plans for her. She has to patrol The Hampton Roads Virgina Harbor.

Saturday Morning at Simpsonville Rec Center or Comunity Center? on Curtis st at 8:00 am, Buddy is coming, Don't Know who else.

Every Good Steel Guitar Show Needs a few good singers and Saluda is no Different. At Saluda We have some of the best that come regularly and support our great show. Tommy Dodd brings his band "Timeless Highway" and The Bass player, Brad Williams is one incredible voice, The lead Guitar player, Mike Johnson can tear up a Hag song as well as his G&L ASAT Special guitar.

Rob Parker brings a whole wealth of Talent and experience to the show and all of the players are always asking Rob to help them out. Rob always has a display of the many Cd's he has recorded with every Steel Guitarist known. Rob has been one of the strongest supporters of the Southern Steel Guitar Convention over the years.

Stop by Rob's Table and Buy one of his CD's, you will be glad you did.

This time, Joe Casey is trying to arrange his schedule so he can come up from Florida. Joe is a terrific singer and and worked the trenches in the northeast for many years. I believe once I can get Joe to one Saluda Show, He will be hooked

and will be back every time. Joe is a very strong supporter of the steel guitar and knows how to work with steel guitarists to bring out their very best, keep your fingers crossed, its sort of iffy right now, but I believe Joe will make it and help make Saluda Steel Guitar Convention #70 very special.

I mentioned before that We had a lot to reflect on at this show.

This Show will be dedicated to the memory of our good friend Jeff Newman. Buddy Walker and I discussed this yesterday at Simpsonville SC and agreed that this was the very least we could do.

Jeff was the last person to perform at our last show and he caertainly wouldn't want for this Celebration of of Our 70th show to be a sad event either. We are going to pay our respects, remeber the good times with Jeff and Celebrate 70 Shows all on the same day.

Come out and be with us on this Special day.

Well I have to report that I didn't sleep in it, but I did set it up and look at it a little bit before I went to sleep.

It was a proud day for me yesterday and to have my good friend and brother, Buddy Walker there to be part of it was very special. As I stood at the Front door of the Shriners Childrens Hospital and had my red fez placed on my head by the Potentate of Hejaz Shrine, it was a special moment. but this was soon over and we went on a tour of the hospital, There were 30 other than myself that became Nobles yesterday in Simpsonville SC.

We were reminded that a lot of work is necessary to keep these wonderful hospitals operating. That is the reason for having that red fez place on your head at the front door of the hospital. To remind you thats what its all about, those Hospitals and the Children they benefit.

Did you ever hear of a hospital with no billing office, Well I did yesterday. Thats because the cost of treatment for the parents of the patients is absolutely free.Even insurance Companies aren't billed.
Its Totally free to the patient.

Each Shriner is the billing office, in my opinion working for donations. We always try to give you something in return for your donation, if it is selling candy, food and drinks at the shows, a ticket to a fund raising event, that provides a meal or a ticket to The Southern Steel Guitar Convention at Saluda.

The Southern Steel Guitar Convention at Saluda is the best return on your donation that I have ever seen. Thats why I am committed to help with this show and after seeing where the Proceeds from this show go and how it is used to benefit The Children, my committment is stronger than ever.

This show is a Win Win Win situation for everybody concerned. You folks get good value for a very modest admission price, We all get to hear some great music. The players and the members of the Saluda Shrine Club get a warm and fuzzy feeling inside and no its not the corn dogs

Its from doing something good and the Shriners hospitals get money to help Children, whose parents just might not have the means to provide the care and treatment they desperately need.

There's not a loser in any of us who participates in this event, be it Audience, Shriner, Player, the Kitchen Crew or the brother who sits at the back door and sells tickets and gets to see very little of the show.

Please come out and help us make the 70th Southern Steel Guitar Convention the biggest ever.

Thank you very much for your support of the Saluda Show over the past 17 years.

Any child may be eligible for care at Shriners Hospitals if:

the child is under the age of 18, and
there is a reasonable possibility the child's condition can be helped
Shriners Hospitals are open to all children without regard to race, religion or relationship to a Shriner. There is never a charge to the patient or parents for any medical care or services provided at a Shriners Hospital.

I would like to incourage everyone that can possibly to make this event to try their best to be there.
Buddy Walker works hard to make the Show a success along with Charles Reese and all the members of the local Shrine Club.
So let make this a special Day for Show # 70 and have a record attendance. As for me and all the Ga. Gang this is like our home show also.
Let's support Country Music and Steel Guitar.
