I installed the Avira antivirus software on a Windows 2000 (SP4) machine.

It disabled the Add/Remove software function in control panel.

Avira is not removable by ordinary means.

Poking around in the software guts in \program files\avira with some debug/resource kit/hex editing tools yields some nefarious looking stuff. Like maybe the cure is malicious too.

Does anyone know of a trustworthy Avira removal tool? And perhaps a replacement/third party tool to use in place of Microsoft's Add/Remove Program utility until I figure out why it don't work?

Thanks all...

That's weird. I use it and never had any such problems. Did you get it from the company website?

Wiz, I don't remember the source. I see that a google search yields hits on searches for Avira and AVG removers.

Would you have any idea what would be stepping on or in front of Add-Remove Programs making it stall? I see that when I attempt to execute it, a service named mshtsa fires up in the process list, but otherwise there is no new window.

Ray;
Let's try this. Download the latest version of Avira Anti-Vir, from the Major Geeks link on the Avira Free download page.

Install the program, using the "repair installation" option, if one is presented. Otherwise, just install and update Anti-Vir (and scan for malware). Often a repair reinstallation will fix broken uninstall routines.
