Using Xp Home Edition Version 2002
Service pack 2
Amd 1.05 Ghz
1.96 Gb Ram
Problem;
I am using 2 external drives, one is 250 gig (H drive), the other 500 gig (J drive).
My problem started 2 weeks ago.
My PC recognizes drive “J” immediately, but takes 45 min. to recognize drive “H”.
If I restore back two weeks, might this help?
Thanks in advance,

It sounds like the 500 GB drive J is failing. Have the drive checked by a nearby company with the proper test equipment. If no stores are close that can verify the condition of the drive, run this command from a Command Window and read the results:
Chkdsk J: /R
(enter)
This will scan for bad sectors and other file system problems and try to fix them. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I had sort of a similar problem. My two external drives, (500GB and 1TB,) took a while to read, as well. I inadverantly discovered that if I unplugged them completely at start up and plugged them in one at a time after the start up process had completed, the computer would rcognize them far faster than if I left them plugged in. (My feable reasoning was that maybe the disk check was trying to decide which one to check and couldn't, causing it to stall a little bit.)
Also try swapping the connection cords and the USB ports, too. Cords go bad and a friend just had to install all new USB ports.
Best of luck resolving your drive issues! _________________ My best,

I have also found that it takes 3 minutes to connect to the internet. However, once the connection is made everything works OK.
I ran the dskscan, no problems, and now I'm defragging.
I'll try the external drive on my other computer to see what happens.
Thanks

The external drive finally booted up.........so I am transfering file to other drives.
How much space should I leave on the drives for maintenance programs like defragging, etc.?
Example: a 100 gig drive. What would be a reasonable amount of space to leave free.
Thanks

Leave a minimum of 15% free space for files to be moved during defragmentation. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
