I just wanted to let everyone know that we have moved our location for Herby Wallace Productions. I started this business in 1979 after I quit working the road on a regular basis. As many of you know I was located in my home town of Chattanooga, TN until 1989 when I moved to Sevierville, TN. I have been at the same location in Sevierville since 1989 located in a small shopping center. I regret to say that I have made the decision to move my business into my home. I feel that even though I would have preferred to have kept my shop, it just wasn't the thing to do. My overhead just keeps going up and it has become more and more difficult to compete in today's market. The steel guitar market has become so competitive just like many other businesses with the internet and so many more people selling steel guitar products. I don't mean to come across as complaining, but it is just the times. My rent was getting ready to go up again and I would have had to sign a new lease, so I decided this was the time to make the change. Now let me make it perfectly clear that we are not going out of business, but just changing locations. Many of the other steel guitar shops around the country have been selling out of their home for years and it works. I will still be carrying the same products as before. The only thing that is going to be different is that I will not have a walk in store in my home. First, the subdivision I am in won't permit it and my insurance will not cover it. So, my business from now on will be strictly mail order, but actually in the past probably 75% has been mail order anyway. I will of course still be doing as many steel guitar shows as I can and have my products available at the various shows.

I appreciate everyone who has supported me and my business over the years and I plan on being around for a long time to come and I have plans for several new products to be introduced soon.

My new mailing address is: Herby Wallace Productions, Box 5784, Sevierville, TN 37864.
My phone number is: 865/453-2973. My web site is still www.herbywallace.com. and my email is still HWallac480@aol.com.

Hi Herby, at least you won't have to fight the traffic to get to work each day. That's a big plus.

Herby, This sounds like a good move. The internet is the future of business, except for Wallmart.
I always stop by your booth at the Dallas show and I love the Showcase finger picks you sell. They are the best and I have all of them. Your tab is excellent.

Most folks who sell Steel Guitar equipment, accessories, and instructional material now operate out of their home. They have been driven to it-in some cases by the very people they are trying to help. Some people copy music CDs and instructional material and give them to other people free, with no financial return to the players who worked so hard to make the products and who invested and risked their own money to bring them to market. If this kind of activity becomes widespread, the providers will just have to cease operations. Think about this the next time someone wants a free copy of something you purchased from Herby and other artists.

I really do'nt see how any music store can stock new steels when you can get them from the manufacturer maybe for less money !!! It must be very hard to compete in this field . I understand how store owners must feel. But i do appreciate all of you guys . I wish all of you the best . Regards,,,Gary .

You are so right about passing copies around. If we don't support folks like Herby then our sources for merchandise like he stocks will dry up for us.

The "I can get it wholesale" attitude is hurting everybody. If Herby can't sell at the Shows, then He can't come and perform. Then a lot of people don't get to hear this great player.

Let me tell you something about Herby.

Herby Wallace comes to Saluda SC for most of the 4 shows a year there and performs free to benefit the Shriners Charities. He has to make his expenses selling his merchandise there. Gasoline is going sky high and it cost Herby the same as you pay for it. So think about that when you pass by his tables on the way to the restroom at Saluda. It might be a good thing to stop by and look over his large selection and buy something you need on your way back from the restroom. Please wash your hands tho.

John

A lot of good , intelligent thought here. To be honest, this is something I've thought about myself. I can't do it with my large stock, but who knows what the future will bring. Herby has hit on some very astute observations here, the internet, competitors in houses, everyone being a dealer now, taxation from local governments, higher rents on business locations. It just keeps getting worse. It may not be obvious to all but my business and products have changed over the past two years. More software, less hardware, more products made by me, less in house repairs, etc. Yes, Herby is undoubtedly making the correct decision, if his competitors don't have a commercial overhead, why should he? He will still be there to help the steel world, he just may be able to spend money for himself instead of rent.
Times are a'changing!

I think Herby is better off if you stop by on the way back...

I agree with everything said here. It's getting more difficult all of the time. Prices on merchandise being cut to grab a larger piece of the pie while expenses in operating a business keep climbing. Unless you do such a large volume, your profits go to paying your bills.

This is sad news indeed. Visiting Herby's store was always a planned part of my Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge Vacations. I've enjoyed the times I got to stop by and visit with Herby, browse around and see his selection of Steel guitars, and just talk shop. To this day, I still wear my Sierra Steel Guitar Belt-buckle I bought at his store about 9 years ago. Being a businessman myself, I really can't blame Herby for making this decision due to rising costs in operating expenses. I'll miss Herby's walk-in retail store in Sevierville. Herby, Good Luck to you with your new headquarters location. We look forward to hearing you play at the Steel Shows.

Always your friend, Nick Reed
