So what's the verdict? It is worth downloading the new version of Internet Explorer? Pro's? Cons? Opinions?
I've been holding out to see what everybody thinks before I jump into the pool... _________________ My best,

Ernie, I've been using it since the Beta version and no problems. It is the "current" version for Microsoft. If you have XP or Vista I would say get it. |

Ernie:
I had difficulty accessing certain web sites with IE 7 and read that the solution was to use IE 8, so i tried it out for a few hours yesterday.
I dumped it.
Two major components--the command bar and the favorites toolbar--can be turned off. I then found that I had no way of turning them back on--the option to do so was grayed out. A web search showed that others were having similar problems. I don't need the aggravation and found other ways to access my required web sites with IE 7.
I think IE 8 is still a beta. Maybe it will eventually be OK, but I see no reason to change. |

I have IE 8 and like it. It seems to be a (tinnie) bit faster than IE 7.
Also, I may have a higher version than Mitch. I can turn on and off the Favorites Bar simply by right-clicking the 'tab' bar and then select/deselect the 'Favorite Bar' option. My version is 8.0.60001.18702.

Use caution when upgrading to IE 8 if you are using Spybot Search and Destroy with the Internet Explorer SD option selected and are immunizing IE Domains and Zones. The large list of blocked websites will break IE8 at startup, causing it to crash repeatedly. The only solution I found was to close IE8, open Spybot and remove the SD Helper option and undo all IE specific immunizations. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Internet Explorer, the bane of web developers for years, is the 800 pound gorilla that refused to comply with web standards and best practices. While Firefox, Safari, Opera and other browsers have been updated regularly to display modern HTML and CSS (Web 2.0) as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) correctly, IE seemed frozen in time and web developers have had to write special code for it. IE 8 has a "compatibility mode" that enables users to view sites the way they would have been rendered in IE 7. The hubris of Microsoft is unbelievable in this statement on their web site:
Quote: |
Compatibility View
Internet Explorer 8 is a new release and some websites may not yet be ready for Internet Explorer 8. Click the Compatibility View toolbar button to display the website as viewed in Internet Explorer 7, which will correct display problems like misaligned text, images, or text boxes. |
Incredibly, they're trying to turn the whole issue around, and blame "some websites" for not displaying correctly, when the reason they don't display correctly in IE 8 is because of the special code that had to be written for IE 7. _________________ C#

Up through I.E.6, Internet Explorer was the "bastard child". But starting with I.E.7, it was designed around the current industry "standards". There are a few web sites that are still designed around I.E.4/5/6 and never updated and that can be a problem with the new I.E. browsers. One post on the Dell users forum even went so far as to say FireFox was not compatible with the same banking site also.
Safari has not been a "crowning success" on Windows PC's. |

Thanks for your inputs, kids. I'm in no hurry, so I'll let them fix on it a little while longer. _________________ My best,

I had forgotten about this thread and let MS update download IE8 yesterday. It crashed continuously even after restoring to a couple of previous dates.
Every time I opened IE it would close itself. I finally restored back to yesterday when I updated, shut down SpyBot, and reupdated and installed IE8 .. It works fine.

Anybody who upgrades to Internet Explorer 8.0 and also uses Spybot S&D, or SpywareBlaster is probably going to have trouble. The immunization process in Spybot and Blaster places hundreds of bad websites into the IE Restricted Sites Zone, in the Windows Registry. Previous versions of IE had no problem with these mass entries, but IE 8 does and crashes as soon as it tries to load any website.
AS a workaround, please undo all immunizations for Internet Explorer "Domains" and the SD Helper. Install IE 8 and reboot. You will have to operate Spybot as a pure scan on demand tool. Forget about immunizing Internet Exploder for now. Use the HOSTS file to block bad websites, rather than the Restricted Sites Zone.
Team Spybot is aware of this issue. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
