Speaking as a die hard Ray Price fan, I did not particularly like this rendition of the tune. That is nothing against the artist, it just did not conform to my taste - personal opinion only.
That said, I find it interesting how the "really good stuff" gets revisited, recycled and revived according to the trends of the times. "Shoes" is a great old song and I am delighted that artists across the genres recognize that.

Raul and Ray are both great singers. The only things I didn't like about the video were the Fender Jaguar (yuck) and that the rhythm guitar was too loud. The guitar solo was good.

The camcorder microphone does him no favours. Raul is a mighty fine chanter, in my opinion. Funny to imagine that his earlier stuff is that most soul-less of genres, New Romantic. Spandau Ballet, anyone?

I really can't tell if what he's doing is serious or if that's a boring, tiring parody of bad bar-room singers? Sure, he's got a good voice, but all the "affectations" and bullspit he's doing make me want to slap him in the face with a fish or rubber chicken.
As my old drummer would say...

Man that version with Raul just about P******d me off. Did anyone get the feeling by his facial expression and body language, that he was patronizing anyone who thought the Ray Price version was great!
As far as I was concerned, I never liked the Mavericks either.

Raul is using his apparently limited imagination. The kids call it "styling", I guess.
He may as well have put a bone through his nose or done "Ave Maria" as a shuffle.
But it no doubt attracted the attention of those who knew of the song's history. That is to say, it did what he wanted it to do--get people talking about Raul Malo. As subtle as Roseanne Barr's performance of the national anthem some years back. Nothing new about this at all.
I remember when a well-known talk show host commented that he had come to the conclusion that "Madonna wants to shock us" (in response to her latest caper of some kind). He said it in a sarcastic way that indicated she was being all too transparent and obvious in her clumsy attempt to entertain.
The audience response to the talk show host was nervous tittering--as if they weren't sure if they were supposed to agree or not and had to first check the politically correct gauge. Somebody once said you can fool most of the people most of the time. |

I may get drummed out of the forum for saying so, but I kind of dug it, except for the relentless back-beat guitar.
Malo definitely has vocal chops out the wazoo. The guy's got a strong, well intonated voice.
His guitar solo was kind of a hoot as well. I noted a one-measure Grady Martin quote from Price's version of "Funny How Time Slips Away," and an Ernest Tubb ending riff. And of course, the Duane Eddy twang every four measures.
All in all, I've definitely heard worse. BTW, I used to occasionally play with Lee Ross (composer of the song and famed disk jockey in LA). Lee's gone, so we can't ask him what his opinion would be.

I like what he was trying to do, but the voicing of that 6th chord he's using just doesn't sound right to me here at all. Maybe it's not being able to hear the bass properly, which is supplying important stuff - all I get is that 6th and it doesn't seem anchored. I wonder if this is just a real bad recording. I like this (IMO better recorded) version quite a bit better - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dH5_hcAgSk - the guitar is much more balanced in the mix and fits better.
I hear his guitar solo almost trying to channel Mickey Baker, which is not an easy thing to really get right. This is sorta' what I'm talking about - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JObkGgAnNZ4 - Mickey's technical capability and command of harmony and voice leading was truly outstanding.
In general, I think Raul Malo is a really fine singer - he's not really known for his guitar playing. I think he has plenty of imagination. I understand that he's not everybody's cup of tea - he is highly stylized. But I like his body of work over the years. To me, to hear him in his element, listen to his interpretations of the great crooners like Roy Orbison and others - for example,

Yup, that's what I was talking about with that 6th chord - especially on the intro vamp, it did sound like a D minor chord. But I think it's pretty clear it's in F and those chords are intended as 6ths. I think it comes out quite a bit better on the alternate version. |
