What is the average width of a U12 string spacing and the collective width i.e., all the strings?

On my 1982, MSA, "The Universal" 3 11/16" 1st string to the 12th, 5/16" string seperation. I used a ruler to measure so it may be off 1/64", or so.
Edited to say...See below for accurate measurements.

No, divide by 11 - there are 11 spaces between 12 strings.
It varies a bit by manufacturer, but I think that 11/32" is the most common string spacing (at the changer). _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

I think Klines are slightly closer...nut = 3" and changer = 3.5". I think a special P.U. had to be made for us when we were getting our midi P.U.'s. (For the U12) |

Dekley also has a closer string spacing. I can't get to mine until Sunday but I will measure it then. My son doesn't like it because of the spacing. |

The Thomas 12 string is 1/4 wider at the changer than my carter. This does not seem to bother me BUT!! My ZB 10 string is wider and bothered me to go back and forth on my D-10.

11/32" inch spacing gives you a total that's 1/32" larger than 3 3/4" - within the margin of error for eyeballing it. My Sierra SD-12 was 11/32" and my Williams was custom made at 11/32" to match it. Standard spacing on Williams guitars is narrower, 5/16" I think.
The Sierra Olympic, Crown and Session 12 string models all have 11/32" spacing. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Here's what I get on mine:
Tab: |
Nut Changer Spacing
MSA Mill. 12 2 29/32 3 23/32 11/32
Zum 12 3 3/32 3 23/32 11/32
Carter 12 2 29/32 3 25/32 11/32
Emmons p/p 12 3 1/32 3 26/32 11/32
ShoBud Pro III 10 2 21/32 3 2/32 11/32
Fender Str. Mst. 8 2 6/32 2 19/32 12/32
|
The small differences at the changer may be due to strings not being centered on the finger. Maybe those are all 3 3/4", but the Emmons did seem slightly wider. For the spacing I rounded everything to the nearest 32nd of an inch. I don't know if our fingers can recognize differences less than that.
I threw in a typical D10 and a classic no-pedal for comparison. Most 12-strings seem to have the same spacing as the 10-string of the same brand. The idea that spacing is or should be different for a 12-string seems to be a 10-stringer myth. |

1982, MSA, "The Universal" , After using an accurate measuring tool, I found that David's MSA measurements are the same as mine.
Sorry for the misinformation..The difference was a "desk ruler" and a digital caliper. AKA knowing,or guessing !!!Bill _________________ Bill Ford S12 CLR, S12 Lamar keyless, Misc amps&toys Sharp Covers
