I found this in an old song hits magazine from 1970.
Thought it would be an interesting thread.

Bill I actually have one of them , I gave it to my son many years ago, I think it cost $75 used, its no wonder he never did learn to play it, they wasn't much of a guitar but it did play some what. Thank god I had a better one then that to start out on.

I built several of those in the late 70's for customers of a music store I worked for. Similar in ways to a ShoBud maverick, cheaper construction. I think they at least got a couple of people started on steel. |

Hey, the Mark I was my first pedal steel and I purchased it from an ad in Guitar Player magazine. I finished the body myself and I think I paid $149.00. Many years ago |

You had to have safety glasses on to play one of those. Some say they even had a D10 model.I never seen one of those D10's though.

Market Rite made at least 3 different models, but all of them were pretty poor...compared to a Fender 400 or 1000, either of which could be bought (used) for about the same price back then! |

I got mine in 1978 for $149.00. I still have it and it stays in tune and dosen't break strings. I loved it, still have it and since I don't get rid of anything, I always will. My only problem is the plastic holders for the legs, two are broken. If I could replace or have new ones made, I would take it with me when I travel, it is light! _________________ Carter S-12U, Sho-Bud LGD (80's), Fender Jazz King, Korg Pandora Toneworks PX4D, Modulus Q6, Ampeg B5R, Lapstick Travel Guitar mod to lapsteel |

Here's a similar ad from an old Guitar Player magazine. I got the opportunity to take apart a Mark 1 a few weeks ago. Very basic, like you would expect. Raise only changer. The knee lever E to Eb is accomplished by pre-raising the E with a strong spring and then you slacken it down to Eb with the knee lever.
Actually when we got that part of it set up right, it worked surprisingly well. I never did figure out a nice way to set up pedal c. I just couldn't do the multiple linkage cantilever flexible thingamajob. But pedals A and B set up ok. It was a little bit weird to get the turnbuckles just right, because some of that stuff had to turn in increments of 1/2 turn.
The pickup was a little low on windings on the one I messed with, but the tone was nice. It was light as a feather.
