Topic: pedal rod question |

i'm no expert on this so i'm just kinda thinking out loud so to speak
i have noticed that the pedal rods are always connected by just the end being bent and hooking in a hole , and this is a point of slack so why not make this connection using a clevis ? if the clevis is on the end of a threaded rod then to the guitar it seems a good way to get rid of the slack at the hook end plus it would give another way to adjust the pedal travel.. or am i just plain wrong

You mean like this?? This way all the pedal rods are the same length so you just pick one up, and clip it in place without having to look for the right one.This is the MSA Milly, hope Reese doesn't mind me posting it...Bill

Calvin, you are raising a valid point here. But as I see it, there is no slack in the "hook and hole" method when the steel is set up in playing position.
The weight of the pedal and rod takes care of whatever slack there is.
OTOH..that MSA system is really very nice! Just imagine having an adjustment there so all the pedal rods can be the same length! |

unless the rod and hole are very tight it creates slack , when the guitar is set up just lightly tap the pedals and listen to the chatter
there might be some that don't have this but all mine have had it . i am sure that MSA in the picture doesn't

Calvin, even with the slack out of that area, the slack in other areas would come into play. Tapping the pedal on any steel will cause a bounce (and noise) due to the spring action, and the clearances in the entire pulling train.
Proper setup and adjustment will reduce most of the noises unless there's excessive wear or poor design. |

Donny is Right-ON! Remember that there must be a certain amount of slack in the pull train, or your raises and lowers will not function properly. I've seen guys adjust their guitars to eliminate all slack and noise only to end up wondering why their guitar will no longer tune-up and play properly.
Slack is kinda the nature of the beast.
