I'm trying to concentrate on scale studies to open up possibilities while soloing. Most of the books I've found are geared to guitar. Is there a scale-oriented book that is written for the pedal steel specifically? Or is there some comprehensive steel course somewhere that includes a good section on scales? I have several of the "usual suspects" steel books, and while they may have a page or two of scales, there is nothing really exhaustive that I've found so far.
Thanks. |

Jeff Newmans "Just Play the Melody" is literally a book of scales,,,and would include all you would need for soloing,,,plus open your mind for other possibilities |

Howdy,
Joe Wright's "The Ultimate
E-9th Scale Book" may be what you're after. "Exhaustive" is the perfect description, 123 pages of scales....my head's not big enough to dive very deeply into this puppy. You can have mine (perfect condition) for $30 including shipping.
email me you're interested.

It depends on what you need to learn. The Newman scale book is good to get going but is oriented towards country music. Joe Wright has a excel spread sheet program that has it all but is is raw information that you will need to do your homework with. Doug Jernigan has a very good E9 scale book also. _________________ Bob |

You know what, Tamara, I have one of Joe Wright's books called "My Approach" that I haven't made much of a dent in - I flipped to the back, and there was some scale stuff there too! Thanks for jogging my brain.
I also found this great little FREE ebook about scales:
http://pickstroke.pbwiki.com/f/The_ultimate_scale_book.pdf
It's for guitar, so none of the fretboard diagrams will work for steel, but the scales are spelled out nicely. It's clear, concise, and well written, with some good exercises at the end. What I've started to do is just map out my own scale patterns using good old-fashioned graph paper and a ruler! Once I have a pattern 'under my fingers,' I can run it through all the exercises in the ebook. Awesome!
For those interested in a more automated route, check out:
http://www.studybass.com/tools/chord-scale-note-printer/
You have to load in your own custom tuning, then tell it what scale you want and it prints out all the notes on the fretboard. It can't deal with pedals/levers, but it's a good start, and it looks nice! |

I also just bought the electronic version of Joe Wright's E9 scale book:
http://www.pedalsteel.com/ashop/catalogue.php?exp=16|&cat=17&shop=1
Not a bad price at $12.50! As you would expect from Joe, it is very thorough and will keep me busy for awhile. |
