Topic: New switch for EMCI? |

| I have a feeling that my neck switch is on it's way out on my EMCI (pushbutton switch). I've been thinking on a replacement and wondered if anybody has rerouted the body and replaced it with an Emmons switch assembly? I feel quite comfortable with the Emmons and wondered if that arrangement would work? |

John,
Ive had similar problems, being that I play that brand as well. My solution was to drill a small hole in the changer endplate just above the output jack and install a mini 3way switch purchased from Radio Shack. The switch has a detachable plastic tip, and when removed, the arm wont catch on the end of case etc. Maybe not factory, but I got tired of fooling with that two-plunger throwback.
Buddy advised me to dowel up(press fit)the 2 remaining holes between the necks after I moved the switch to its present location. Also, he said that routing out the body for another type of tone circuit, etc, might weaken the body(why the first few original '64 p/p's had no control panel, but switches, pots, etc, mounted in the back face of the front neck).

Hi John,
I am in the same situation. Mt double push button switch is shot. It is very difficult to find a replacement: no one seems to have any, and I haven't been able to find the switch in any parts catalogs.
I will happily give my old switch to anyone who can fabricate a new one. I like the original double push button switch: it reminds me of the push button shifter on the old Dodge Darts, it's retro and cool! Is there anyone of you who can make a new one?
I am now considering alternatives, but I would prefer not to have to rout out the body, as Mike says. Jim Palenscar has a solution of mounting a switch under the guitar (is that correct, Jim?). What I may do as a temporary solution is get a mini-toggle switch that will fit into one of the holes, mount the toggle switch to a small plate, and drill a second hole in the plate for an anchoring bolt to go through the second hole to hold it down on the body. With this I won't need to drill any screw holes into the top of the body to mount the plate, I won't need to drill or rout out the body, and I won't have any open holes in the body. If I do this I will post pictures of how it turns out. Please post any solutions you come up with, or if you find a source for the original style switch. I think this is something that every EMCI/MCI owner has to deal with sooner or later.

| Didn't the JCH's have a choice of toggle switch or small flipper like the Emmons? This is not to denigrate Mike's idea, I'm just looking at all of the possiblilities. |

| There should be a number somewhere on the switch. If those type switches are still being made, you may be able to cross-reference it with another manufacturer. |

John F. hit it on the head. We have a pretty decent electronics shop here in town and a few years ago I did as John said and discovered the bad news.....no longer available. Also, a mini wont fit in either of the body holes for the plungers. Jimmie's cutout between the necks was larger than on the EMCI.
I wouldnt have drilled the e/p but I was out of options. good luck!

Hi John. If you decide on using a Mini switch, you will need a Single Pole Double Throw- Centre On switch. Here is a wiring diagram for you. Hope you find a solution.

The difference is with the Centre Off switch it turns both off. The Centre On switch will give you Pickup 1 with the top setting, or Pickup 2 with the bottom setting or both on at the same time if you use the middle setting. Rich.

Well, it appears that I can't locate a SPDT ON-ON-ON either. However, you may be able to use a DPDT and use only one side. Here is a link:

I must admit I have not tried this, only found the wiring diagram on the web. Now I can't find that location with the diagram. I think if you used the SPDT ON-OFF-On, the diagram I supplied earlier will NOT work.

I couldnt find the desried mini switch either so I went with a 2way mini; either side on separately but not both together. At least its working again  |

You could also use two SPST Push ON Push Off PushButton switches (available at Radio Shack). Push one on for one pickup, push both on for both.

| The EMCI in my shop uses "Schadow" brand switches. They don't have a part number but what you need is a "latching" switch. The Schadow line was absorbed by another company some time ago but there should be surplus switches out there somewhere. "E-Switch" also makes latching switches. |
