A 1961 Fender Pro just sold on ebay for US$4450!

This is over $6300 in Australian Dollars!. Admittedly, it is in very nice near new shape.

here is a link to the ebay site (if it still works)

you and I should form a club.

I bet you never expected that your Pro might be worth US$4500??!

(this one was one of the pinky-brown early '61 models, and was in barely used condition)

Yeah, even in this economy, there's no shortage of stupid people with lots of money! Laughing

"Book Price" now on that amp (in excellent condition) is $2000-$3000. So, the buyer paid at least 50% too much for the amp.

Go figure.

yeah, I thought so - the fender amp guide has a trend graph of ebay prices that said 1750 for that amp - on a par with what I paid for mine.

It has collectors appeal, I suppose - pity in a way.

Truth be told, I never liked the sound of the Pro on guitar, I needed distortion and that amp never had it. I didn't know about Tubescreamers back then! Actually I was happier with the Bandit!
If I knew I'd be playing steel, or if I knew what I know now about bias and setting up amps, well, lotta ifs there! JP

Hey Brad, this was 30 yrs ago, and I wanted to sound like Van Halen! The truth is, that amp eventually ended up in lil Jim's hands, and is the amp he used on his Seven Days Album, along with an American Standard Strat that I gave him. To add insult to injury, somebody stole a lot of Seven Days' equipment at the Blue Note in Columbia, including that Peavey Bandit! JP

Bringing up an old thread...

That picture that shows the Pro and the Vibrasonic...

I now own that Vibrasonic. I know it's the same one by the stains and the tears on the grille.

I bought it from a guy named John Kelly? thru this forum , from Arizona about 5 months ago. Did this amp reside in Austrailia? Any info about this amp would be appreciated.

It looks like the Vibrasonic is missing a speaker in that photo. When I got it from John, it had (and still has) a correct JBL D-130 (not F) with what I believe to be an original cone, but I suspect the speaker is not original to the amp...it's alot cleaner than the amp overall, and it's got a really high serial number, 5 digits. Sounds absolutely killer though.

Anyway, it's cool to see my amp pop up on the interwebs. BTW, I love it, and it makes me want more brown Fenders.

cheers!

Here is a pic of my amp just before John sold it to me.

In fact, you can even see (in both pics of the Vibrasonic) the pieces of what I believe to be blown aluminum dust cap down at the bottom edge of the baffle, stuck behind the grille cloth. You can see two larger ones (size of a quarter) on the left, and a smaller one over to the right.

I picked these out when I got the amp, they look like exploded shreds of aluminum dust cap, complete with glue and everything.

Another reason to suspect the speaker is not original to the amp, but not incorrect.

Good times!

When you see something go for such a price remember that it may just be a friend shilling for the seller who doesn't want to sell cheap...

That's probably the case here. I can't see how it could go for that much. They sit for months on eBay at $1800 to $2000.

Gruhn guitars has a Musicman RD65-112 for 2K.
It does have some history as it belonged to Johnny Cash's last guitar player. Still seems awfully high for an amp. Musicman amps have been sleepers for a long time though. I still find mine comparable to the Fenders I have.

It's like anything else .....Any item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it .....Sometimes there are bidding wars on Ebay and folks pay more for used items than the items go for new !!..... Jim

James,
Very true. I have seen things on Ebay with a buy-it-now price that get a bid to cancel the buy-it-now price and go up $600.00 over the original BIN price.
Where is the logic? More money than common sense.
