Roger,

My wife and I fly over from Portland to Honolulu on Monday, April 27 and stay until May 7.

Besides the HSGA convention there will be a large celebration of May Day or Lei Day held in Kapiolani Park. May Day is on of the great Hawaiian holiday celebrations.

I always love getting off of the plane and smelling the fragrance in the air produced by the plumeria flowers. It is refreshing. Cool

Another thing I like is the balmy air of the Pacific. Cool

Lastly I love hearing the Hawaiian steel guitar playing on the beach at Waikiki while the waves crash in on the beach with the moon appearing between the palm trees as you view Diamond Head. Cool Cool

Can anyone draw a better picture?

Aloha, Smile
Don

Don, recently, there's been a lot of talk going on amongst the musicians here. Recently, KIKA Entertainment has just acquired the contract for providing music for the Moana Hotel, Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton Waikiki, and Princess Kaiulani. As of May 1st, 2009, KIKA plans to make changes to the Hawaiian entertainment by bumping the trio down to a duo, which means, in short . . . no steel guitar.

The Big Island has suffered worse.
While in Kona for 3 days, I called the hotel's that the HSGA website recommended for seeing steel guitar.
All 4 major hotels that used to provided a Hawaiian trio has now been bumped down to a single player.
CD's may be next??? Whoa!

Currently in Waikiki, the only steel left to hear that I know of is:

Alan Akaka - Waikiki Marriot - Thursdays
Bobby Ingano - Waikiki Marriot - Sunday (only if he's not tired from work)

Greg Sardinha - Heard his group may have one day at the Halekulani but things may change there too on May 1st, as KIKA also has the music contract for Halekulani. Best to call before going over. [/b]

Derrick is right on the $ about the serious lack of steel to be found, maybe worse than ever before.
Please, for those who care about this sad turn of events, let the hotel's know explicitly that shorting the public (and entertainer's) on good Hawaiian music AND HAWAIIAN STEEL GUITAR is not the way to go.
There is power in #s and we'll have the #s in the next few weeks. Be vocal about it!

About all there is in quality steel is what Derrick mentioned, plus Bobby can now be found on Monday (and possibly) Wednesday's at the Marriott, sitting in with Mike Keale's trio @ 6:30pm (again, when he's able to), and Greg may have a second night at the Haleku'. Greg has also reestablished his welcoming gig at the airport arrival area, so those flying in should be able to experience some good steel immediately.
Jeff Au Hoy may have some very worthwhile gigs around Honolulu, but the info for those might have to be shaken from him in person, and they usually are later in the evening/night.

Ron,

Bobby just told me that Mike Keale will be moving to the mainland in May, so the Monday and Wednesday gig is history.

However, Bobby said he and two others are planning to get together and fill the Monday slot. Proposal is pending.

Stay tuned.

He did mention to me that there was the possibility of him having a set gig there, glad to hear it's coming thru. I think he'll be using Mike's fellow bandmates, eh? But I had no idea that Mike was bailing to the mainland!

Thanx for the update, Der.

If anyone has a chance to venture to Kauai, Edward Punua plays on thursday at the Waimea Brew Pub at the Waimea Plantation Cottages on thursdays from 7-10 pm along with Gabby Manintin on guitar, David Sproat on upright bass, and Uncle Ambrose Smith on uke. Old time Hawaiian music is still alive. Ernest Palmeira is at the airport this month from 9-1130 am with Albert Genovia.

I believe Ed Punua is the player that has the Barney Isaacs style, and learned a bit from Barney.

Also, Bobby will be at Winchester, he told me, for those who are going there in July. He will be at the Dayton Festival the week before Winchester. Smile

Also, I'm bringing a 7 string Gibson EH150, or maybe it's a EH100 ?? to Winchester to sell. The proceeds will be towards the guest fund, which is for expenses to bring Hawaiian steel player guests to the Convention.
Whatever it is, it has the Charlie Christian pickup, if that's any clue. The serial number is 501-24, which I was told is 1938 vintage, but don't know if that's accurate.
