I emailed Josh Grange asking some questions re: setup, instruments played, etc. on this album and he was kind enough to reply. I am pasting his email here on the forum in case others may be curious as well. He sounds like a nice guy and his respect for Tom Brumley and Ralph Mooney is evident in his playing and words.
Hi There Walter,
It was a real fun record to be a part of. Dwight is an interesting guy. Very good hearted, very talented. And his relationship with Buck was such that he felt it was his duty to give Buck a proper tribute as only Dwight could do.
We had been touring all of 2006 and when the year was over we went right into the studio to record. It was a whirlwind.
Dwight is a huge fan of the Ralph Mooney sound, and when he was with Buck, Mooney used a Fender. So I found an awesome Fender that Mike Headrick sold me, a Fender model 800, 10 string steel with an added knee lever. We used that through a modern Fender Twin reissue with the 15" speaker. It was turned up to level that was somewhere between medium and loud.
The Fender has a very very lively springy sound, somewhat like the ZB that Garcia played.
Josh is referring to Jerry Garcia on CSN&Y "Teach Your Children Well"
Unfortunately the engineer used a DI box, tapping my naked steel sound before the amp, and part of that tone was used on the record, blended with the microphone from the amp.
I personally think it would have sounded better ONLY using the mic from the amp. But there it is for all to hear! It seems that each song has a slightly different tone.
I also used a Sho-Bud S-10 on the songs that Tom Brumley played on.
Some of the tracks were recorded live, one take, one shot. Others were over-dubbed.
Glad you are enjoying it. Buck had such a great band, with Mooney or Brumley. I think his stuff stands as some of the greatest in the history of American music, now and forever.

| Josh really nails it on that record. Great playing. Love the Fender and Sho~Bud tones. Josh is with K.D. Lang these days, playing steel and guitar. |

| I love the tone on that album. Interesting that Josh didtn care for the DI blend. such a cool album...such great playing. For me, the steel really stands out and runs the show on this album (yes the vocals are pretty good too). |

Pete wasn't involved with this one...he and DY no longer work together. It was produced by Dwight.
As far as amps, these days Pete likes Amp Farm.
And yeah, Josh did a great job. |

guys i have the cd dwight sings buck i think its great good steel work i also have most of the songs by buck i love both of them a lot of difference there some i like better by buck some i like dwights version i like to play along with both depends on my mood

| That's why I never let them get a direct feed from the steel. (while it's possible they might do something great, they almost always screw the tone up). |

Hey Fellas : sounds like a winner to me; where can I purchase a CD of this great piece of music?I'm not a Yoken fan but I loved Buck, Mooney; and Brumley; and I really love good steel guitar playing..Bernie

Bernie, I downloaded the record from iTunes but you could probably find the CD on Amazon.com. If you like good steel pickin', guitars twangin' and Buck' songs, I'll bet you will like "Dwight Sings Buck". Dwight even has someone singing Don's high harmony.

| To the best of my knowledge, the BG vocals are handled by Eddie Perez, Dwight's lead guitarist. Great harmony singer and picker. He's sort of like Dwight's Don Rich. He was with the Mavericks for a while, before joining Dwight. |
