In reading over my copy of SWING BEAT newsletter, I see 2 familiar names of new inductees into the W S Hall of Fame: Rocky Caple and Tommy Harvell. I think they played in Memphis in the past. Does anyone know their history? |

Hugh:
Rocky Caple spent time in the Slim Rhodes band with John Hughey. Here is a pic from 1955. I would like to have heard those twin steels.
Not sure how long he was in Memphis, but I later associate him with Arkansas and Oklahoma. He may be best known for writing and performing "Sawed Off Shotgun", a steel instrumental.
I associate Tommy Harvell with Hoyle Nix's swing band in Big Spring, Texas and don't know of his Memphis connections. |

Thanks Mitch -- Tommy also played with slim for awhile. Eddie Cash called me some time ago in an attempt to locate Tommy Harvell, but I could not help. At that point in time, I had a western swing band (with 3 fiddles) at the Eagles Nest, Memphis. Pee Wee Suggs left Slim to take a job with Sears; he later transfered to Tampa to become manager. Thanks for the photo and mental refreshment. |
