Hey! Just an old dummy here. So please someone tell me exactly what this: "Skype" is, and what one has to do to hook up to it?

Also, most important, since it's networked, what risks are involved in picking up things not wanted from using it?

Thanks,

Don

Edpackard should get it, or just Packard and pick Ed in AZ from the list.

Don, its like free telephone and video calling from your computer.

The program is free and can be downloaded from www.skype.com

You will need to use either your computer speakers and a built in microphone, or a headset, or external speakers with an external microphone.

Some people are using the microphone on their webcam or video camera.

I have a video camera set to webcam mode and I use a Blue Snowball microphone. I also have a headset but the small mic on the headset is made for voice and it cuts out other sounds so it is tough for people to hear the steel.

It is not necessary to have a camera and you can start with just the basics of a mic and speakers. It will still allow you to watch a Forumite who has a camera.

As far as viruses - I would suppose any time you connect your computer to the internet you risk that. But since you control who is able to contact you this shouldn't be an issue.

Brian, Thanks for that info.. Sounds quite interesting. After I get things up and running I'll get back to you.

Thanks again, and sorry it took me so long to respond back.
