Effort less 3/4 time ballad telling a story. You notice that after his solo he shuts up and lets the piano come in and color the picture. Alot of steel players could take a lesson from that. Wait your turn. Moon man is a heavy dude. Waylon knew it. He talks (not shouts) with his steel guitar.

Just my opinion here BUT is is something to think about..
Waylon was among the "Superstar" status.
He made it to the bigtime with no steel in the band basically.
He was famous & had the $$$ to hire ANY steel player he wanted BUT yet he chose to hire Moon..
Does anyone know why??
And before anyone starts shootin' at me, I really believe that Moon very much improved Waylon's sound once he was added to the band.
He also gave Moon plenty of room to work in a song too > i mean seems like Moon always had room to stretch out in the songs & helped to make them hits..
I think it was a mix that melded together ( Waylon & Moon ) that really worked out well on stage & in the studio..
I know of Moon's previous career playing with Wynn, Buck & Merle BUT he did some SUPERB playing with Waylon also i feel..
Everything he played on with Waylon was wonderful.!!!
Just my opinion .. Thanks Ron

I need to ask a dumb...no, really dumb question. In the first clip, isn't that the C6 neck? If so, how the heck is he getting the E9 sounding pedal work at times? I'm really amazed at the sound, and also feel a bit better about my out-of-tune moments on certain fills, the same one he's out on. I really see why Jeff Newman doted on this dude's tone and style...My new hero for sure.

In the second clip, the string doubling lick...can it be done with the 4th string and c pedal and 1st string? Or is it the KL on the 2nd string and the 4th with no pedal? I need coffee Muttering

Moon had his version of E9 (no chromatics) on the back neck. He has some sort of dobro type tuning on the front neck. His tuning or setup is unlike any other, totally unique. He routinely uses both feet on the pedals on E9. Long live the Moon.

I've listened to A Couple More Years so many times that I can't count the times. There's something about Moon's playing in that song that pulls me in. There are several on YouTube with Moon playing, including some back in the early 70's before he started wearing the hat. Great stuff, for sure.

I don't know why Waylon hired Moon, but I'm sure glad he did.

"The feet that made Merle Haggard famous", is'nt that what Waylon says introducing a Moon solo on the Waylon Live album. One of the very best steel players ever, in the top 5 in my book.

My guess would be that Waylon wanted someone that didn't play the typical Nashville style, but someone that was still strongly country-oriented (as opposed to country-rock). That left him with few good choices, with Mooney probably being the best of them, IMHO.

Donny;
Your answer makes a lot of sense. i had not thought of it that way until you said it.

You could tell that Waylon really respected Moon & his musical abilities > Waylon really shared the spotlight with Moon.

What a GREAT song & Moon's playing is SUPERB !!!!!!!!

Jeff is dead on with what he said here IMHO:
"If this don't show off Mooneys style, nothin' does."

What can you say about Moon that hasn't already complimented!

I saw Waylon&Willie at Milwaukee's Summerfest in the mid 70's and Moon changed my life. I had never heard such a cool sound. I was mezmerized and shortly af
ter that I got my 1st steel and never looked back.

There is something intangilble about Moon and his playing that is just COOL!!!
