Cryin' Time Again, t prior

Post by Tony Prior »

Here is an early mix of our pending CD/TAB project release, Cryin' Time Again, Bucks tune. License pending.

This one features my wife Bonnie on the vocal track and is the first project coming off of PC based Sonar which I started poking around with a few months ago.

This one has a few phrases using the 5,6,and 10 lower( FP Ped) as well as some phrases off of 3 and 5 dropping 5 a half step. The intent on this track was to merge traditional with contemporary.

Sonar is quite a learning experience, I'm about 20% knowledgeable now which means dangerous. :whoa:

Tony that is great sounding steel, whatever you are useing it must be right......
If it was your average punter listening I would say less is more ie: the guitar part was so small by comparison you tend to savour every note of it so, being a steel fanatic I would say do it the other way around Make `em wait for it use it sparingly...you have the impact part of it, the sound you are getting is great on that recording.

But on reflection, and being a steel nut!! Fire the guitar player and wind up the steel!! >:-) :) :) :)

Thanks John !

I did, many times, but he( me )wouldn't go away !

On this track I tried something a bit different within' Sonar for the Steel and the short Guitar part ( intentional) , for the Steel I used a stereo delay but this time went with 295 ms left and 305ms right which kinda spread it out and for both I created a sort of "early reflections" reverb which gave it an "across the room" kinda feel, what ever the heck that means!

I fully agree that if this was an "artist release" type of track it needs more guitar or even a fiddle, but seeing it's purpose is Steel guitar education , the Steel wins !

Jaclyn, Jeff, thanks for the nice comments.

James, I am in process of tabbing this now and it should be ready to go within a week. What you hear is what you get ! The program, like each of the others will have full tab, a discussion track, performance track and this one will have two tracks , both without Steel and one without the Lead guitar for those who want to just play it all.

thanks

Congrats Tony!
You have just gotten yourself two addictions in one now. Recording is addictive and new recording software can easily eat up any sparetime left over from pedal steeling.
And as if that isn't enough, wait till you get hooked on editing and mixing...
I vote that you hang on to the guitar player. He did OK to my ears. :)

Hey Ulf, thanks, I have been "tracking" for years but this was my first pass at a full" PC software " adventure. I have been doing some editing and some mixing but I do have to make some time for the TV remote control ya know ! I have a good friend on YouTube, dustpuppy, who is the resident Sonar guy. I have added steel tracks to two songs using Sonar for him, he has been a great asset.

yes it can be addictive no doubt.

thanks
