I'm looking to get a good dose of Mr Hughey. Can anyone recommend a few recordings where he really shines?

Thanks!

John Hughey plays his tail off on Dickey Betts' "Highway Call" album.

Mark, here is a list of John's instrumental recordings:

I own, and can recommend, Pure E9 , Every Time You Touch Me, and John Hughey.

Most classic Conway Twitty has John on steel. Check out "Lost in the Feeling" for some particularly sweet playing. He also did a lot of work with Vince Gill. But you can't go wrong with his solo recordings. They are very well-produced, and the playing is, of course, outstanding.

I wore out two vinyl copies of "On And Off Stage." Been playin' steel since about 1970, and there are only two songs I've spent the time to learn note for note. One is Lloyd's "Bar Hoppin." The other is a song I abdo-lutely HATED until I heard John do it. "I'm Not Lisa." Stunning!

As I have mentioned in previous posts, the "Jumpin' Time" DVD (by the group the "Time Jumpers") recorded live at the Station Inn is an ideal opportunity to not only hear John, but watch him in action and up close. Most tunes feature John on C6 but his E9 playing on "Sweet Memories" (vocal by Dawn Sears) and the instrumental "My Weakness Is Too Strong" is worth the price alone. The most soulful steel guitar playing you will ever hear.

Go to my website HERE and click on the red tab labeled "John Hughey Memorial Page." Scroll all the way down below the Danny Hullihen interview, and you will find a number of his videos and MP3's.
