Only if you help me with my homework, tuck me in, and read me a bedtime story. On second thought, cancel the tucking in part.

Howard & Lawrence - aw c'mon you guys, isn't the reason you live in the city so you can enjoy all the night life?
DVA - if things work out the way I hear, I may be able to give you a copy in person before long. |

Small world, my sister lives around the corner. But, she doesn't like Country music. I listended to the 2 clips. Sounds good. The first kinda hit me like progressive southern rock (if there is such a thing). Liked the steel work and twangy guitar on the second. So there are really people around there that like Country music?
[edit]
I just talked to my sister. She said she knows someone from the dbs. Maybe you, or someone else, I forgot. But anyways, she's going to try and make your CD release party. She is interested in how a pedal steel works/sounds in comparison to a non-pedal steel. I told her to download barrys train to get an idea. Hope you have a good time.

Erik,
I'd love to meet your sister (and I mean that in a good way). Case 150 isn't country in the sense of what you hear on mainstream country radio or CMT. It's much more in the Americana/insurgent/alt.country vein although we don't like those terms so we've chosen to call what we do "twang-pop."
If this was 1973 (and it pretty much still is if you live here in central PA) I'd say we were a country-rock band, but that term is less meaningful today than it was back then.
Since you mention the db's, there's an interesting convergence here. I did a stint with the db's in the mid-80s and played on their album "Like This." One of the songs on that album has been re-recorded by Last Train Home for a db's tribute album (on the Paisley Pop label, I think). And of course, Dave Van Allen (see above) is LTH's steel player. The song is "White Train," he shared a rough mix with me, and it's sweet.
DVA - any info? Working title, release date? He and I live only about two hours apart but we've never met, except here on the Forum.
Your sister probably knows db's drummer Will Rigby. I think he lives somewhere near the East Village and he gigs with Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, who owns the Lakeside Lounge where we're having the CD release. They are both in Steve Earle's band, The Dukes. So it's small steel world.
Anyway there'll be a free CD waiting for your sister and I'll be glad to show her how a pedal steel works.
Update - that should be dB's, not db's. Website: http://www.thedbsonline.net/index.html [This message was edited by Mark Tomeo on 08 January 2004 at 10:25 AM.] |

Hi Mark!
Thanks for the response and hospitality. I live in CT and am working about 12 hrs a day now so I can't make it, sorry. Who my sister said she knows I'm not sure. I will ask her again. She spent many years as a club DJ there in the EV. But lately, she has become interested in guitar and has taken some lessons. She knows of my interest in Country and steel guitar (though, I don't play). A few months back I was telling her how a pedal steel sounds different than straight steel. I will make sure she knows about your invite and offer. I listened to all your clips and I like what you're doing. That steel intro to barry's train is very infectious. I played it over around 20 times. Nice playing!

Got to see Case 150 last night....."Twang Pop" it is and real, real good. Nice vocals & harmony and great music. Mark sounds real sweet(in a manly way of course, and no, not that way) on his Zum'
I also had the pleasure of meeting the famous Purple Zum. Some of you will remember a few years back when the buy & sell was the most entertaining spot on the forum. The Purple Zum ruled....for a long time. What a beauty she is. |

Howard...I'm so glad you were there. The city looked like a snowglobe from the windows of the Lakeside as they face Ave. B.
We had a great time and played about as well as we can. A shout out to some of our friends and guests who came to help us celebrate. They include NYC scenester and urban explorer Michael Malice; punk poetess Tibbie X of the X-Possibles (with whom I'll be recording in March - punk steel!!!); Jack Frisch, web and CD art designer (Larry Carleton, Hiram Bullock, Christian McBride, Marcus Miller & others); and singer-songwriter extrordinaire Joe Charles, who has a terrific new CD out, "War & Dancing."
In the immortal words of Rick Derringer..."and we all had a really good time."

Mark, glad you had a great time. I haven't talked to my sister, she was 50/50 on going because her friend was going somewhere else that night and she doesn't like to go alone to bars (unless she's working). BTW, it's YOU she recognized on your web site. She says a friend of hers was best friends with a, Willie?(sp), from the dBs. |
