Steel in Whole Tone Tuning: ( Contains Graphic Dissonance!)

Post by Kevin Macneil Brown »

For any interested, here's a composition made with a 6-string steel tuned to whole tone intervals. I spent a few days mapping out melodic motifs and chords, then recorded the piece solo in real time with a reverb and delay paradigm I'd set up within the recording software.

Thanks for listening!

Very nice! If you're not into real-time looping, you should probably look into it.

I appreciate the kind comments, guys.

Twayn: I've been known to consort with an old school rack-mount Lexicon Jamman, probably will do so again.

Dave: I do post new stuff from time to time, usually at "steel on the web".

Thanks for giving a listen.

I like it, but I don't hear the whole tone tuning...

the first notes strike me as 5, 4, 1, then #4. WT scale would be 1, 2, 3, #4, b6, b7 or their equivalents...just curious, I don't mean to sound snarky or anything.

Jukeboxalive link doesn't seem to be working, you might want to check it.

Mike: Thanks for listening so closely. Your ear is good indeed. I agree that the piece does not really have a whole tone feel to it. I guess the tuning was a jumping-off point to take me outside of boxes of my own making.
David: Jukeboxalive audio player sometimes requires disabling of pop-up blockers; perhaps that's the case here.

Thank you again to all who give a listen.

Nice and moody. Reminds me of the waterfall I have in the bedroom with some looped soothing sounds. I kept waiting to hear a slide. It all sounds cool but could have been done on any instrument, you'd never know it was a lap steel.

I love it. I would love to hear some surreal poetry recited softly and not overpowering the music, but saying the same thing.
