I recently replaced all the tubes on my amp ,due to a bad 6l6 ,at the very least. I was told the set I put in were "matched" ,but I now have a slightly fuzzy sounding amp ,with a distorted sound . I have full power back ,but the tone is not what it was . I no longer use it for steel , but my guests won't use it for guitar , they all want my Peavey . I own a meter & am moderately intelligent ,is biasing the tubes doable or should I ship it to a real repair person , it is 4 yrs old ,& used only as a spare , I am the original owner. Any tips ? Thanks _________________ Billy Lee ,Pro-II,, Session 400,Session 500 , Supro , National, SpeedDemons,& too many Archtops & Stratotones.Lots of vintage parts for Kay ! etc. |

Get a Bias Rite from Weber VST and you can bias the tubes easily without having to open the chassis (as I recall the reissue has a bias pot - if not, you would need a tech the first time to have one installed). Tube amp owners either need to know how to bias an amp - and what affect biasing has on both tone and tube life...or have a good tech and money. Personally, I prefer the first choice - I hated charging guys to bias amps when I was doing my tech thing. I much preferred having them get the tool and then showing them how to use it if they had questions.
In the long run you'll save a ton of money with a small investment. _________________ No chops, but great tone

Thanks Jim ,I did see a pot ,when I had the chassis out ,looking for cold solder joints . I did'nt find any , but found a solder ploppy shorting a leg out on a tube. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I also thought that certain "grades" or "ratings" of tubes could break up sooner than others.... _________________ "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Aint' Got That Swing" |

Mark ,I would tend to agree , but ,I' m shooting in the dark . I DID remove all the replacement tubes ,except the 6L6's $ put the originals back in ,& it seems cleaner ,but not livable , I should have returned it under warranty ,but my original dealer sold out, it may be time to contact Fender ,I appreciate the comments & clues . So is it a safe assumption ,that new 6L6 tubes should have the bias set with the tubes in the amp ,with proper tools ? I still have an overdriven sound ,which was not my original problem . Jim Sliff thanks for sharing your time with us egg heads .
