Nashville music great Buddy Miller recovering after heart surgery
By PETER COOPER • Staff Writer • February 21, 2009
Buddy Miller -- one of Nashville's most celebrated singers, songwriters, guitarists, recording artists and producers -- reportedly suffered a heart attack in Baltimore, Md., on Friday, Feb. 20. He was on tour with Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin; the tour is dubbed "3 Girls And Their Buddy."

Miller, 56, was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and he underwent a triple-bypass heart surgery. The surgery was successful, and Miller will likely be recovering in Baltimore for several weeks.
Named the "Artist of the Decade" by No Depression magazine, Miller has written songs that have been recorded by the Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack, Brooks & Dunn and others. He is a veteran of Harris' Spyboy band, and in the past year he has been touring as a featured instrumentalist in Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' band. He has produced albums for Solomon Burke, Allison Moorer, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and others. Miller has lately been producing a new album for Patty Griffin. He has been called "the best country singer" alive by Steve Earle.
Miller is married to Nashville singer-songwriter Julie Miller, and the pair have a duo album coming out on New West Records on March 3. _________________ John Macy

Buddy is most certainly the best country singer/songwriter/guitar player alive and he needs to stay that way. I once played steel in a band with Jim Lauterdale and Buddy Miller and that ranks as a highlight of my life. Hang in there my friend - you're not done being Buddy Miller yet. |

I spoke with Buddy yesterday. He sounded good, if tired, and is looking forward to getting back to work after an appropriate period of recuperation. I'm sure he appreciates all the good wishes. |

If it means anything more... and what could mean more than what Buddy has already accomplished?... Buddy was also a steel player when he lived here in Austin in the early 70's. His '65 Emmons is now lovingly in the possession of Jim Loessberg.
Hang in there Buddy! _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

He's still a steel player, Herb. Played steel on a few tunes during the recent Krause-Plant tour.
I remember that old Emmons well...beautiful axe. |
