OK, you guys, I went through a lot to get this into PDF for all to enjoy, it scanned through as a complete four-page PDF package.

And more importantly, when reviewing the Sand video performance by Jerry Byrd on my site. I was able to play along with him---he's using this arrangement in the video!!!

Of course, it's not note-for-note, but play along with the video using this arrangement and you'll see that he's using A9.

Once you've played through it, compare it to the B11 version that you know.

I think the A9 version has much more richness due to the Dom9 chords.

What do you guys think? Inquiring minds want to know.

The link to the PDF is right above the video. Cheers!

Here's the link as well:

That's great Josh!
Thanks for posting. Actually, just seeing
Jerry play it and having access to the Tablature
is fine for me.
Say no more.
I am a Jerry fan from the "get-go" Very Happy

CC, thanks for supplying this awesome arrangement.

I definitely think the A9 tuning is great one for this version of SAND.

Jerry may have played Sand using A9 tuning at some point, but the video is B11. He's clearly playing that C9 chord on the first fret, and it would have to be on the third fret if the tuning was A9.

Regardless of what your eyes tell you, play the arrangement in the PDF along with the video using your steel guitar, regardless of the theory, it matches in sound. Please give it a try.

I probably shouldn't be entering this discussion since I am a rank beginner[and I do mean rank].I have to agree with Jerry, because I am currently trying to learn Sand from the B11th tab in Jerry Byrd's course and I have been using the instrumental part of that video as an aid [unsuccessfully I might add] to the timing and phrasing for that song.Jerry is playing pretty much the arrangement that he teaches in the course right down to that dam change from a 2 note 10th fret A9 chord to an unobtainable 654 fret slant C6th.
When I play along,if I haphazardly happen to land on the same chord or note that he is playing[usually after missing most of the passage being played]it sounds to me like my guitar is in tune with his.I'm not but my guitar is.

That A9 tablature does Not match the video. Like Jerry Gleason said, JB may have played Sand in A9 at some point, but not on that video. Jerry is playing B11 on that clip. The frets Jerry's playing on match B11 perfectly, and they do not match the A9 tab posted, sorry. It's not just a matter of a "different key", the A9 tuning is not configured like B11... the chord voicings and the phrases are different.

When I recorded my version of Sand (link below) I tuned my steel guitar to B11, and I watched that same youtube clip very closely, matching the frets that JB played on... including the C9 chord on fret 1, and other chord positions, slides, and fills. Jerry's voicings are right there on B11, no question about it.

The A9 tab version probably sounds okay on it's own, but you'll be scratching your head trying to match it to that video. If you want the exact sounds heard on that clip you're gonna need this tuning:

B11

1. E
2. C#
3. A
4. F#
5. D#
6. C#
7. B
8. A

PS ...keep in mind that Jerry played Sand in B11 in his Big Course. Winking

I agree with Doug...Jerry is playing in B11th here. I've had this video for years, and have played the B11th arrangement from his coursebook. This is probably my favorite recording of Jerry playing Sand, because the great Gary Aiko is singing! Smile

I post as these ideas pop in to my head. My favorite version of Jerry playing Sand was at the 1978? winchester convention in the motel parking lot and Jerry played it to a latin rhythem with a fine guitar player who I believe Jess Hurt had brung with him. Jerry had been showing how Billy hew Lin played in A6 and someone wanted Sand and the guitar player started the latin beat and Jerry played it using A6 and a split string technique to lower the mid E to Eb while the bar nose was on C# and A. Jerry got a standing O And his reply was I apoligize to Billy. cc

OK so I stand corrected OOOPS! Embarassed

When I was playing the arrangement yesterday, trying to keep up with Jerry, every once in a while I'd look up to see where he was on the fretboard, and in my haste it looked like we were matching in other (frets and key).

However, I just watched sitting here without the steel on my lap....and knowing the B11 version much better than the A9...I can see the positions he's using and hear those 2-note intervals for most of the melody.

The MP3 sample clip of me playing Sand uses the B11 tuning.

However, no one here has mentioned that Jerry is playing Sand in the Key of D--which is the same as the A9 version that was supplied by CC (that's what I meant in my original post Razz ).

They modulate to the original Key of C when Gary Aiko starts singing, at which point Jerry switches necks.

A little challange for you xspurts out there. I know the answer to the ?? because Jerry told me. What tuning did Jerry use when he switched to the outside neck while backing Gary Aiko? I had no idea until Jerry told me. cc

CC: I've heard (from the forum) that the second neck was diatonic.

The other thing: I can tell from some of the comments that no one has actually played the A9 arrangement along with the video.

If you did, you'd find that it fits, and many of the licks are identical all the way thru to the vocal section.

Can anyone here honestly say they played it alongside the video???

I didn't actually play along side, but it looks and sounds like B11th (to me). I don't hear different chords and harmonies that are typical of JB arrangements in alternate tunings.

Yes, I tried playing the A9 tab along with the video, it's close... but no cigar. Winking

Some of the A9 tablature is close to what Jerry is playing (on different frets), but he's playing B11, and there's no way to play the exact voicings he is playing on that clip using A9. It's not possible, considering the layout of the two different tunings (see the chart below). The A9 tab sounds fine on it's own, but linking it to that video is a stretch, in my opinion.

The basis of the song "Sand" is the rich 9th chord on the middle strings, AND the 6th chord on strings 1, 2, 3, 4. That 6th chord is Missing from the A9 tuning. Jerry keeps returning to that 6th chord on stings 1,2,3,4 on the video. It's a D6 (all 4 notes). You won't get that on this A9 tuning, sorry. That's probably why Jerry chose to play the song in B11 on this clip from the year 2000, instead of the A9 tuning, which he may have used in earlier years.

The best way to compare tunings is by intervals.

Both tunings have a similar, rich 9th chord, although B11 has an additional low 9th tone.

Strings 2 through 5 on B11 are the same intervals as strings 3 through 6 on A9. So when Jerry plays that C9 chord on fret 1 in the intro of Sand, you can play that on fret 3 of A9, same voicing, different fret And different strings.

A9 tuning: strings 1,2,3,4 do not produce a full 6th or a full major chord like B11 does. Some of the sounds will translate from one tuning to another, but players will be doing a lot of "hunting and pecking" if they try to match that tablature to Jerry's video. I know I was. I couldn't match it exactly. But when I switched to B11 I was able to reference Jerry's frets exactly. Every phrase is there, note for note on B11, not that I can play like JB, but there is no mystery, no hunting and pecking if you have the right tuning to match the video. Again, the A9 tablature is fine on it's own, although the tuning is missing the 6th chord, but just beware if you try to match it to the video in B11. Winking

I was going to post the backup tuning tomorrow however I forgot about an MRI and other things so for all of you who were to scared to answer on the forum and emailed and called me; it was the diatonic that Jerry switched to the outside neck to back Gary Aiko. I asked Jerry why he switched expecting some glorious answer and Jerry said;"I just felt like it" cc

Thanks to CC for the arrangement and all the other participants here for the fantastic info. I'll be updating my site to reflect all the new knowledge that was provided here.

And I'm still really enjoying the A9 Sand arrangement, I just love how it's so different from the B11 version.

Now all I need is a D8 to accommodate both tunings... Cool
