Jessica just has trouble trying to sound country.

There is an article in the on-line Nashville Tennessean, this morning, on Steve Martin and his Banjo. And it's like he has been a Bluegrass fan all his life, and now that his other career is in the wane (his current Pink Panther film has been dissed as being bad) he has put out a Banjo album. The song sample that accompanies the article sounds more like "Folk" than it does "Bluegrass".
It's been a trend for many years that artists from other venues (music and Hollywood types) all of a sudden want to be "country music" singers and I don't recall any of them really doing well and only sell product because of their name. |

True, Jack. Terry Bradshaw, for example, launched a country music career about 25-30 years ago, and I got a call to audition for his road band or something, but I didn't follow up on it. I don't remember it ever amounting to anything.

Hey, Jack, I worked with Glen Duncan the other day. We were talking about Steve Martin, oddly. They're pretty good friends, and Glen showed him some banjo things early on. He was saying Steve really is a pretty decent banjoist. Eager to be really good, as well.

you should have heard Keith Urban singing live at Daytona yesterday. Bring back Jessica !
During one of our Nville trips we went to the Opry, Brad P was performing in the non TV segment, man something was really amiss, he was singing easily a half step off from the band ,at times maybe even the whole step, minus a few cents. Cringe.
Being a steel player, I never realized that one of the primary advantages to playing was being able to compensate for singers pitch "on the fly" ! I can play natural, sharp or flat in the same song, hell, in the same 4 bars ! |

I truly appreciate ANYONE who can successfully sing at the Opry
because by all my observations, both there in person,
and in general from comments here,
the monitors there suck wind at the bottom
of the food chain most nights.
I have heard Jessica sing with great range
in solid proper pitch.
I have heard normally solid singers
screw the pooch at the Opry.

I wasn't going to say anything about Keith Urban's set at Daytona. But, since it was brought up I couldn't help comparing his set to a lot of the rock acts.  |

Steve Martin has been playing banjo, in performances and on records, and at festivals, since the 1960's. |

Isn't Kevin Costner trying to be a rock star now? I saw Adam Sandler on Letterman a few weeks ago doing "Like A Hurricane". You think they just get bored making all that $$$$ in the movies?

There are some exceptions to the rule. Sissy spacek, who played Loretta Lynn in Coalminers Daughter did an excellent job, and so did Beverly DeAngelo, who played Patsy Cline in the same movie. But I know what you're saying - most Hollywood stars should stick to acting. |

Adam Sandler was a music performer BEFORE he became a movie star,
so he's just doing what he did again.

| I'll take Jessica over that Sugarland gal any time! She has a terrible twang that makes me wonder how they ever won any awards???? Also I agree that Paisley sings flat live, & Dierks is right there with him, I saw a live show a couple years ago that I wasn't at all impressed with K. Urban, Gary Allan opened for him, & not only had a much better band, He was the better singer! How did Chesney escape this topic? |
