Help name my band

Post by Dean Gray »

Hi guys, I am putting together a three piece band consisting of steel, acoustic guitar/ukulele, and bass. We will be playing our first gig at a local Tiki Bar in a few weeks (some may remember photos of my previous solo gig there last year).

We need a name and I was hoping you could offer some suggestions. We will be playing a mix of Hawaiian tunes, and jazz/pop tunes in a languid Island style. Mainly instrumental, however the guitarist and bass player are good singers and harmonise well, so we will do a few vocal tunes also.

They are great musicians, but don't take themselves too seriously, so a slightly cheesy name would probably suit us!

Any suggestions?

"Economical String Quartet"
The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being.

Good one Andy! But, unless they are electroplaters, it should probably be Pu Pu Platters.... :)

I chuckled out loud the first time I saw that dish on a menu.

Dean,
If you find a name you like, I'd recommend to make sure there is a "your_band_name_here.com" available.
It makes marketing your band much easier.
You can do this by going to

http://www.DomainBank.com
or
http://www.Register.com

and see if the URL is available. If it is, grab a credit card and secure the name.

Oh boy there are some great names here!

Antikis is right up there as one of my faves, especially as the bass player is a vintage model himself!

Big Island Trio and Tiki Gods are cool too. Pu Pu Platers may not have quite the vibe we were after!

Mike Neer - you seem to know your way around Sydney pretty well!

Jeff - thanks for the tip, I will look into it.

I should mention these guys have a country band I play steel in, called The Wantin. We may be forming a splinter group minus the lead singer  so any suggestions that mix tropical and rural imagery would also be cool.

The bass player goes by the alter-ego "Slim Diamond", the guitarist is "Herb Wrangler", and as my real job is a firefighter they have named me "Bernie Blackman"

So far I have only come up with the fairly obvious The Hawaiian Cowboys, or

Bernie Blackman And The Hawaiian Cowboys.

Thanks for the suggestions so far - I still like the Antikis....

Actually, Bernie Blackman and the Tiki Gods has a certain ring to it too.

Keep 'em coming, and keep 'em cheesey!

Dean, you have some great suggestions to choose from!
Just about any one of those names would work.
You sure asked the right bunch of guys . .

I agree with you - I think "The Antikis" is the one.
It's short, clever, apropos, mysterious and memorable.

After much deliberation, there has been a clear cut winner, and that honour goes to Rick Batey who suggested "THE ANTIKIS".

Rick, if you ever make it to Sydney I will ensure you get front row seats at all future gigs, and I'll be happy to ensure you have a cold beer at all times!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, what a great response!
