Family Gras
Randy,
Your gig is in the burbs, Metairie. The mardi gras parades/celebrations are all over the metro area, at the same time.
Some parts of the New Orleans mardi gras, like the french quarter and bourbon street are "adult" , and that aint where you will be. College kids getting really drunk, ladies lifting thier shirts for beads, lots of rowdiness and such.
The same parades, further uptown, are pretty civilized, many families, and can be fun if parades and crowds are your bag. Rarely any violence or lewd behavior uptown along St. Charles avenue. People grillin & Chillin, costuming and having fun.
What the Suburban "Family Gras" is doing is trying to promote the suburban mardi gras as a more family friendly alternative.
While New Orleans has a well earned reputation for danger and lewd behavior, the police presence is high during tne mardi gras, tourism is the only industry we have.
If you look for trouble, you can find it, but generally it`s the safest time of year.
If I can be of any help to you or anyone coming to the mardi gras, with safety, transportation, food, or live music, let me do so.
Let the good times roll,
Steve Spitz
