Anyone brave enough to download and beta test windows 7 yet? What do you think of it? Suppose to be here in 2011? Here's a link to the download page.

Thanks for the tip Cass. I'm downloading it now. Windows 7 will make a nice addition to my stable, which now includes Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional and Ubuntu 8.10.

Looks like the download will take a while, even on Comcast broadband, as it is 2.44 Gb in size.

I liked it, for what it's worth. I think the new taskbar is a nice addition. I'm not a big fan of all the clutter in Internet Explorer 8, though. Being able to dial back UAC without turning off completely is really nice. Seemed to boot up faster than Vista, but I don't use Vista day-to-day so I don't have a whole lot to compare to.

I think they are also replacing the built in apps like Photo Gallery and Mail with Windows Live versions. I'm not sure how I feel about that yet.

I installed the 64 bit version, on a separate partition, as a dual boot with my Vista 64 bit last week. There isn't much around (free) for a security package so I haven't used it much. It loads faster and shuts down faster but then I don't have anything installed other than the OS and drivers for my video and sound hardware (Vista or XP would initialize and shut down about as fast with nothing else installed).

For those that don't want Vista, they won't like Windows 7 as it's basically Vista.

Linux is better because it boots up much quicker after a crash.

Jack, thats pretty much what we discovered here at the office. It's just too early to tell if they worked some of the bugs out, that they had with vista. That's the important thing actually, not the similarities. Smile Cass

Damn W7 OS can't find a suitable driver for my nVidia nForce network chipset, so I had to use a MSI wireless adapter to update it and get on the Interwebs. Everything else on my MSI K7N2 Delta2 LSR motherboard has been updated to work in W7.

Other than not being able to use the Ethernet port I like it so far.

Well they just said there won't be a second beta, or even a second release candidate. They are really rushing this thing.

I am certainly not the first person to say this but I think they are taking what would have been Service Pack material, making a few UI changes and updating (actually, removing) the included app suite. They want this out the door as soon as possible because the Vista *name* became tarnished at the beginning of the launch, and that has dogged them since.

Vista's problems have long been fixed, but the name hasn't been fixed yet, so they need to do that right away. Vista to Win7 seems to be like 95 to 98. Some interesting changes but the really fundamental stuff was done with Vista, which in contrast took a very long time to develop. I believe this to be a marketing move on their part.
